Carmel's largest running event of the year is coming Saturday, April 18, via the 16th Annual Carmel Marathon Weekend. Notably, it's also the second largest marathon held in Indiana.
Local Race Director Jay Druba says the Carmel undertaking is one of the top Boston Marathon qualifying events. "The Carmel Marathon is truly known for fast times and ideal conditions," he adds. "In fact, we typically see over 20% of our marathoners run a Boston Marathon qualifying time."
This year's event partners are Ascension St. Vincent; Athletic Annex; Bess Wealth Advisors of Raymond James; Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup; Field Brewing; Athletico Physical Therapy; Pure Fuel; Craftsman Exterior Remodeling; Adobe; and Zenbusiness. Community partners are Carmel Runners Club and Carmel City Center.
On April 18, Jay says runners and volunteers should arrive at least by 7 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:45 a.m. At 8 a.m., the 5K and 10K starts. At 8:10 a.m., the marathon and half marathon begin.
Approximately 500 volunteers will be needed to fill shifts during the event weekend. Duties include Expo packet pickup help, gear check, guest services, transportation and aid stations. Some of the benefits that volunteers receive: free parking at the Expo and around the Carmel area; Carmel Marathon Weekend official volunteer t-shirt; complimentary snacks and refreshments.
All runners will receive a themed, moisture-wicking shirt and a finisher's medal, adds Jay.
