When people think about investments, they often picture stock portfolios, real estate or retirement accounts. Rarely does the conversation begin with fitness. But for Joseph and Alina Branda, founders of JNA Fitness, health is not an afterthought — it is the most valuable long-term investment a person can make.
Founded in 2012, JNA Fitness has quietly built a loyal following across Bergen County by doing something refreshingly simple: helping busy adults get stronger, healthier and more confident without requiring their lives to revolve around the gym. In an era of extreme fitness trends and time-consuming routines, JNA’s philosophy is rooted in consistency, efficiency and sustainability.
Joseph Branda’s path into fitness began early. Growing up in Ramsey, he was just 14 years old when his mother helped him land a job at Health Star Gym, now known as 24 Hour Fitness. From the moment he stepped onto the gym floor, he knew exactly where he belonged.
“I begged the manager for a job,” Branda said. “The moment I stepped inside, I knew I wanted to own my own gym someday.”
That clarity of purpose followed him through his teenage years and into adulthood. His first attempt at gym ownership came in 2009, but the business struggled and ultimately failed. Instead of walking away, Branda took the lessons learned and, alongside his wife, Alina, decided to try again. Three years later, JNA Fitness — named for Joe and Alina — was born.
The first location opened in Wyckoff inside a modest 1,000-square-foot office. As membership grew, so did the space, eventually expanding to a 2,400-square-foot facility across the industrial park. That early growth paved the way for additional locations in Waldwick and Montvale, allowing JNA Fitness to better serve clients across Bergen County. Today, the company operates three locations with a clear mission: to help residents become healthier, stronger and more confident through smart, sustainable training.
At its core, JNA Fitness is designed for real life. The gym caters to busy men and women who want results without spending hours each day exercising. Members are encouraged to work out two to three times per week, a structure that Branda believes makes long-term consistency achievable.
“We want the community to know that you don’t have to be addicted to exercise to get results,” he said. “Two to three workouts a week and you can see real changes.”
That mindset reflects JNA’s broader view of fitness as a long-term investment rather than a quick fix. Branda often compares training to contributing to a retirement account.
“Much like investing in your 401(k), fitness works the same way,” he said. “It’s not the workout you do today that makes you healthy. It’s the workouts you continue to do consistently that compound over time and create a longer, healthier life.”
JNA Fitness specializes in 45-minute strength-based workouts, a format that removes guesswork for members. Clients simply show up, and the coaching staff handles the rest — from programming to progression.
“Our members often say, ‘I don’t have to think about anything,’” Branda said. “That’s intentional.”
The gym’s signature offering is small-group personal training, with sessions capped at a 5-to-1 client-to-coach ratio. Unlike large bootcamp-style classes, this structure allows for individualized attention while still fostering a supportive group environment.
Accountability is another pillar of the JNA approach. Coaches know every member by name and take an active role in keeping clients on track. If someone misses a session, they hear about it.
“We text and call if you don’t show up,” Branda said. “People need accountability, especially when life gets busy.”
That hands-on approach has helped countless members stay consistent through stressful seasons of life. According to Branda, the physical transformations are only part of the story. The bigger change happens mentally.
“The best part about what we do is watching people transform their mindset,” he said. “Everyone walks into the gym carrying stress, but they always walk out with a smile. You always feel better after a workout.”
Members often report increased confidence, improved energy and better mental health — benefits that spill into every area of life, from work to family.
“Investing in your health makes everything easier,” Branda said. “That renewed energy carries people through stressful days.”
For those unsure where to begin, Branda’s advice is simple: hire a coach. Too often, people delay starting because they feel unprepared.
“Some people say they want to get in shape before hiring a coach so they don’t waste sessions,” he said. “We think the opposite. Hire the coach so you can fast-track your progress.”
When asked what advice he would give to someone looking to invest in their fitness this year, Branda boils it down to three essentials: strength training, prioritizing protein and limiting stress.
“Those three things make a massive difference,” he said.
Serving Bergen County is personal for Branda, who grew up locally and now lives in Midland Park. His vision for JNA Fitness extends beyond business growth.
“I want our county to be the fittest,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Brandas hope to continue expanding, hiring more coaches and helping even more people reclaim their health. But the mission remains unchanged: create a place where fitness feels accessible, manageable and life-enhancing.
For Branda, the message to readers is clear.
“The only way to get in shape is to start,” he said. “Nobody regrets trying to get healthier. And if you’ve tried before and failed, it’s not too late to try again.”
