Adding Value to Your Home

Larry Glover, of LG Contracting, talks about increasing the value of your greatest investment

Your home is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your lifetime. It should evolve with you as you and your family grow. That means homeowners need to put as much into their homes as they do into everything else. General contractor Larry Glover, of LG Contracting, has worked in various areas of construction. When it comes to homes, he has a few ideas of the best ways to increase your home value.

The most pressing question many have is, “Why should I care about improving my home value?” There are several reasons to consider this, the most obvious being the higher resale value. If you plan to move or sell your home in the future, making updates to the interior and exterior can offer many rewards later on. However, it’s important to ensure that whatever you are putting into your home, financially, makes sense.

“Homeowners need to understand that renovations need to be compared to the value of the house and how long you’re planning to stay there,” Larry stressed. Basically, he said that there is no point in pouring ten thousand dollars into a house that you only plan to be in it for another year or so.

Some great ideas to start your home improvement journey include several cosmetic upgrades such as fresh paint or stain on cabinets, updated countertops, new hardwood floors, and more. These improvements can not only improve your home equity but they can also improve your way of life. Larry pointed out that some homeowners he works with are in a neighborhood with similar home costs. That allows his clients the opportunity to get back whatever they invest in home improvements if and when they decide to sell.

According to Larry, there are typically two reasons someone might want to update their home. The first motive is expansion.

“With the rise of work-from-home,” Larry explained. “I received more requests than ever to make more room in houses. Mostly, people wanted to expand the size of rooms including master suites, spare rooms, and more.”

More and more homeowners are working hybrid or completely remote and need a space in their houses to reflect that. While it may have been considered more of a luxury to have a home office previously, today, it’s much more common.

The other motive that Larry receives renovation offers is due to social media. So often he has clients show him Instagram or Facebook posts of a home upgrade that someone else did. These renovations range from kitchen upgrades to complete home makeovers. Whatever the goal is, Larry is happy to help recreate it to the best of his abilities.

No matter what upgrades you intend to make, the reason behind them needs to make sense to you. New countertops or hardwood floors can help give your home a competitive market advantage but you have to want or need those changes. Larry can help increase the value of your home and once he’s done, you may be able to sell your home for more than you imagined.
