June Garden Guide

Memorial Day Kicks Off Castle Rock’s Peak Gardening Season

The arrival of Memorial Day in late May brings joy and celebration to Colorado gardeners! The days of planting warm season vegetables have arrived! June is the perfect time to plant all those sweet juicy tomatoes, zucchini, corn and pumpkins. But don't wait! Our growing season is short. It is somewhere between 104-134 days, depending on the weather, and most warm season vegetables take 90 days to bear fruit.

  • Vegetables - plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn, squash, beans and melons.
  • Try Companion planting to help with natural pest control.
  • Trees and shrubs will need supplemental water if there has not been precipitation.
  • Cut your grass to a 3 inch length to promote healthy, strong roots
  • Become Water Wiser by taking the Water Wiser Workshop given by the Castle Rock Water Department.
  • Fill your garden pots and planters with beautiful annuals. The colors and fragrances will add delight to your garden.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to prolong the blooming cycle of flowering shrubs.
  • Weed! Weed! Weed!
  • Mulch with Organic Material to return nutrients to the soil.

Gardening is more than a lifestyle to me, it is my passion. After 25 years in landscape design, I still spend every moment I can nurturing my garden, watching it grow and sharing in my harvest. Whether it is vegetables or flowers, I hope I will encourage everyone of you to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and get your hands dirty. Let's grow together. Happy Gardening!
