This holiday season, the Bruce Museum Store is a must-visit destination for unique and thoughtful gifts. We sat down with Justine Matteis, the Manager of the Bruce Museum Store, to learn about her approach to curating the store’s exceptional holiday offerings. From exclusive museum-inspired items to chic winter accessories, Justine shares how she creates a memorable shopping experience that keeps visitors coming back year after year.
Justine’s approach to curating the store’s holiday offerings starts well before the season begins. “I start shopping for the following year’s holiday items right after the holidays,” she says. “Every year, I attend the AmericasMart gift show in January and purchase items for the following December. I’m always on the hunt for items that tie in with exhibitions on display and looking for the next best thing.”
One of the highlights this season is the newest collection of fashionable winter wear. "We have leather gloves, handbags, and scarves, along with matching hats and gloves for children," Justine enthuses. For art lovers, the store offers merchandise related to the Wyeth exhibition, including mugs and a limited-edition catalog. "Our Sibilia line of modern jewelry and home accessories from Buenos Aires is also a standout, featuring kinetic sculptures that are both unique and captivating," she adds.
Supporting local artists and vendors is a priority for Justine. "I pride myself in carrying Stamford native and RISD graduate Catherine Canino’s jewelry collection, which I’ve featured for over 15 years," she notes. The store also collaborates with East Hartford-based Popcorn Custom Products for all logo merchandise, keeping custom work within Connecticut. "We work with local businesses like Hupaco/The Hudson Paper Company in Stratford for our packaging and bags," highlighting her commitment to the local economy.
Creating an engaging shopping experience is essential, especially during the bustling holiday season. "We offer free gift wrapping, play festive holiday tunes, and host special shopper nights and sip-and-shop evening events," Justine shares. Members enjoy an extra perk with a 10% discount, making it a perfect time to join the museum community.
For those seeking limited-edition or exclusive items, the store does not disappoint. "Any merchandise we've created for our exhibitions is limited edition," Justine points out. One such treasure is the Josh Simpson limited-edition hand-blown glass sculptures, inspired by astrophysical themes and vibrant in color.
When asked about her personal favorites, Justine lights up. "I'm in love with our new luxury Italian leather clutch bags in a stunning blue metallic," she reveals. Additionally, the store carries the MYWALIT line of Italian leather small goods, including wallets and credit card holders, perfect for gift-giving.
Being part of the Museum Store Association allows Justine to stay connected with industry trends and discover new products. "Many of my vendors are part of the association, which is a great source for custom products and keeping up with what's new in museum store shopping," she mentions.
As you explore the Bruce Museum Store this holiday season, you're not just shopping—you're supporting local artisans, embracing exclusive finds, and experiencing the thoughtful curation that Justine and her team bring to life. With such a diverse and exciting selection, there’s something special for everyone on your list.
