Friendships take on many forms and come into our lives for different reasons—some last only for a season, while others go the distance. Sometimes, what starts as a "friendship for a reason" evolves into a lifelong bond.
Julia Pucci and Lauren Schubert, co-owners of Shine Salon and Dry Bar in Huntley, are certain that's the kind of connection they share. Today, they stand side by side, exuding confidence in their business and personal styles; their shared passions and principles make their friendship seem inevitable. What may be surprising to learn is their diverse upbringings - one rooted in farm life, from Central Illinois, and the other growing up a child of suburbia in North Hoffman Estates.
Julia, now a successful attorney with her own practice, grew up a farm girl, with her hands in the dirt, literally. Her father had high standards and held her to them. Always a hard worker, motivated to earn a living to support her lifestyle, she worked two jobs from the time she was 16 and continued to work to pay for her education. She believes that foundation became the basis for how she runs her businesses today.
Lauren was raised modestly, where resourcefulness was a way of life. Her father was a tradesman who worked hard to support his family. Like Julia, Lauren credits her dad for ingraining the importance of tenacity at whatever she chose to do. She would often hold multiple jobs; nannying and waiting tables or working in an office.
Despite their varied backgrounds, both were raised with a strong work ethic, instilled by families who believed in the value of hard work and perseverance. It’s this shared foundation that makes their connection so natural and their friendship so powerful.
Although both women attended Illinois Wesleyan College and lived in sorority houses just across the street from one another, their paths never crossed. However, destiny brought them together at the ice rink while cheering on their hockey-playing sons. As they spent more time together, it became clear that they had much in common.
From their similar college experiences to their shared desire to build a life that offered them the freedom to truly enjoy it, their connection deepened. As the friendship grew, they began spending more time together, away from the ice rink. Soon their families were vacationing together; hiking trips are a favorite of everyone.
When you meet this pair, their mutual adoration and respect are instantly evident. Asked to describe their relationship, they simultaneously say “it’s the most honest and authentic friendship we've ever experienced.” For Julia and Lauren, having a safe space to share their deepest thoughts and feelings is invaluable.
When Julia sought support for both her law practice and Shine, Lauren proved to be exactly what she needed and that trust evolved into a working partnership. Together, they've forged a bond that balances the challenges of work and friendship. For each, fulfillment comes from empowering others to feel confident in themselves, a mission deeply woven into Shine’s values. They place a strong emphasis on the importance of community, recognizing that it fosters support, connection, and a sense of belonging in countless meaningful ways.
In a world where true connections are rare, the friendship between Julia and Lauren serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of having someone who truly has your back. Their bond is built on trust, authenticity, and the kind of support that only comes from a friend who sees you for who you really are. It’s a friendship that not only enriches their lives but also reminds us all to cherish those who stand by us through every twist and turn.
