Kitchens Reimagined

Kelly Lankford and the KHL Design Studio team reveal seven must-have design trends for your kitchen

For Kelly Lankford, her journey to interior design began when she was young with sketches of room layouts. In 2007, she founded KHL Design Studio, located in downtown Lee’s Summit. With Kelly's experiences in architecture firms and her background as a design review planner, she brings a unique, architectural lens to current design. Built on the beliefs of inspiring designs, lasting impressions, and creating innovative spaces with reliable execution, KHL Design Studio helps homeowners and businesses with everything from space planning, lighting, furnishings, and installation.

In 2019, Kelly opened INSPO, a modern home decor store, sharing unique home goods and lines designers source for projects. As an extension of the studio’s work, INSPO offers furniture, lighting, accessories and one-of-a-kind pieces from local Kansas City artists, allowing clients and the community to see and touch the details that complete a space while discovering fresh, modern designs and supporting local creators. From curated decor to functional spaces, Kelly and her teams work emphasizes the areas of the home that matter most—including the kitchen.

Most families spend a great deal of time in the kitchen. It’s a place where families gather to eat, entertain and spend time with each other.

Kelly and her team of designers share seven of the most popular trends that are redefining kitchens.

  1. The New Natural: Taupe is softer and warmer than bright white. It provides a calm and a versatile foundation that beautifully layers with either neutrals or a colorful palette.
  2. Luminous & Sculptural Tile: Backsplashes are becoming art pieces. Two major trends stand out: glossy tiles that shimmer and catch the light, and textured tiles that add a sense of depth and character to the wall.
  3. Kitchen Jewelry: Adding a statement light fixture elevates the room and reflects your personal style. Look for curated details like crystals, pearls, fringe or leather accents to act as the "jewelry" piece of your kitchen.
  4. Modern Brass: Warm brass is back across hardware, hood surrounds, lighting, and appliance details. Mixed metals, often brass with black or silver, remain a sophisticated, lasting look.
  5. The Island Hub: The heart of the kitchen is the island. Whether you choose an expansive, multitasking island or a dual island to separate prep from serving, it’s the command center for all entertaining.
  6. Chef’s Shelving: Slim, built-in shelves flanking the range keep oils, spices, and everyday tools within reach. This inset is both beautiful and highly efficient for any cook.
  7. Smart wallcovering moments: Used selectively on ceilings, behind open shelving, or in pantries, wallcovering adds dimension and a personal touch to the home.

KHL Design Studio is a women-owned full service interior design firm. Offering end-to-end service starting with conversations on concept, through construction, to the final install and styling, each designer shares a passion for giving residential and commercial spaces an authentic feel and look.
