What symbolizes an angel? An angel is a messenger of God, characterized as having human form with wings and a halo. The word suggests goodness, and is often used to refer to someone who offers comfort and aid to others in times of trouble. So it came as no surprise when locals Scott Matthias and Barrett Miller along with their spouses announced that they would be forming a new non profit to expand their wings further called Knock Knock Angels Colorado.
Scott Matthias started his career as a realtor in 1986. As a Broker Associate with RE/MAX Professionals – ColoradoRealEstate.com Team he continues to inspire and help those around him each and every day. Scott throughout the years has committed even more time to his craft by receiving and obtaining certifications and designations of GRI, CRS, CSA, CDPE.
Scott was the recipient of The Colorado REALTOR of The Year in 2016. The award is the most prestigious award given to a CAR member and is a culmination of a distinguished career within the REALTOR® organization— at the local, state and national levels. In addition to activity within the association, the REALTOR® of the Year is a person active at the community level and successful in business.
Scott currently serves in the role of 2021 NAR Region XI District Vice President. But at the end of the day what shines through is a man who cares deeply about helping people with having a home to call their own. His tireless dedication to this cause has left a mark on thousands of families to date.
Many factors played into the formation of the Colorado Chapter of Knock Knock Angels Scott explains.” After the door was closed in Mexico after 22 years with our missionaries being held up at gun point---I was looking for another door to open. I knew exactly what I wanted to do but wanted to do it locally. Having lost my Veteran Dad and his best friend, also a Veteran within 45 days of each other to COVID---I knew I wanted to honor them in what we did. My wife Lori and I sat down to watch the National Association of REALTORS Good Neighbor Awards from our kitchen table. This was due to our national convention becoming virtual because of COVID. These are awards given each year to the top 5 REALTORS across the country with their philanthropic organizations. When we watched Vickie Lobo and her organization Knock Knock Angels we looked at each other and immediately knew we wanted to do something similar!”
The original Knock Knock Angels resides in California. Founder Vickie Lebo is a cancer survivor. After having cancer her life changed. She went on a mission of service to her community. She aimed to get the community, to demonstrate caring, and to love thy neighbor. She founded Knock Knock Angels because she wanted to give people a fresh start after traumatic events including domestic violence, homelessness, neglect, or addiction. Scott commented, “ My vision is like Vickie’s vision and that is to spread it across the State of Colorado mainly serving Veterans. Barrett’s and my focus will be to serve Veterans. I wanted to also mention that Barrett lost her Veteran Dad to COVID a week after my Dad. So our commitment to Veterans is near and dear to our hearts. However, we will allow other locations around the State to serve those that Vickie serves in California which would be single moms and abused women.”
October 7th was the Chapter’s first day, and it couldn’t have been more of a blessing .Scott serving as the President and Barrett serving as the Vice President along with all their volunteers spent the day doing what they do best. Helping others get a home. The Chapter’s first two recipients were James, proud Marine Veteran and Tyrone, proud Navy Veteran. Just days before these two men were homeless heroes . October 7th, 2021 Knock Knock Angels Colorado changed all that and helped move them into apartments and furnish ed them from top to bottom.
The date of October 7th to start the organization was not by accident. But by beautiful design. Barrett and Tom Miller, who also own Check Mate Moving wanted to honor their son Nick who was killed in a fatal car crash with his birthday living on each year with the formation of Knock Knock Angels Colorado. Family and friends of the Millers continue to be inspired by their commitment to their philanthropy in the community in honor of their son each and every day of their lives.
This is only the first of many firsts for future Veterans. Scott added that he really,” wants to get the word out for additional Veterans to serve and to have people call us with their new or near new items before donating elsewhere.”
