Lasting Wedding Style

How to Look Like Yourself on Your Wedding Day

Wedding photography is a newer chapter in my career, but photography itself has shaped the way I see the world for more than twenty years.

I have photographed people through celebrations, transitions, milestones, and all those ordinary little moments that do not seem important until later. That has taught me something I bring into every wedding day: the photos people love most are not always the ones that were perfectly planned. They are the ones that feel like them.

The laugh you did not expect. Your mom seeing you in your dress. Your friends losing their minds on the dance floor. The way your person looks at you when they think no one is watching.

That is the good stuff!

Of course, I love beautiful wedding details. Give me incredible flowers, a dress with movement, a great table setting, and light that makes everyone look like they are glowing. But wedding style is at its best when it is telling your story, not trying to impress the internet.

If you are planning a wedding right now, here are a few things I want you to remember.

Choose the dress that lets you be yourself.

The right dress is not always the most expensive, the most dramatic, or the one everyone in the bridal boutique tells you to try. It is the one that makes you feel beautiful and like yourself at the same time.

You should be able to breathe. You should be able to hug people. You should be able to sit down for dinner, dance with your friends, and laugh without wondering if something is slipping, pulling, or poking you.

I promise, you do not want to spend your whole wedding day adjusting your dress or worrying about whether you are standing the right way. When you feel comfortable, it shows. Your shoulders come down. Your smile is real. You are actually present.

Confidence photographs better than perfection every single time.

Let texture do the heavy lifting.

If you want a wedding to feel layered and beautiful, texture is your best friend. Silk, lace, linen, ribbon, velvet, fresh flowers, interesting paper, and even a little bit of candlelight can make a space feel thoughtful without making it feel fussy.

This is especially true for a softer or more neutral palette. You do not need more color to make a day feel special. Texture does that beautifully.

The quiet details can be the prettiest: a veil catching the light, ribbon on a bouquet, linen on the table, or an old photo tucked into the getting-ready space.

Trends are fun. Make them yours.

I love a good wedding trend! Bows, bold color, statement veils, patterned linens, vintage details, gloves, unexpected florals, all of it can be so fun. The question is not whether something is trendy. The question is whether you actually love it.

You do not need a champagne tower or a certain color just because Pinterest told you so.

If it feels like you, do it. If it does not, skip it.

A wedding does not need to look like every other beautiful wedding to be beautiful. It just needs to feel like the two people getting married.

Spend where the memories live.

There is so much pressure to make every single detail perfect. But when you think back on the best weddings you have attended, do you remember the exact napkin fold? Probably not.

You remember the food. The music. The speeches. The hugs. The people who stayed until the last song. You remember how the room felt.

Spend thoughtfully on the things you will actually experience and the people you trust to take care of you. That includes your photographer. A professional photographer is not just there to take pretty pictures. They are the person who has your back, is in your corner, and knows how to turn a wild, fast, emotional day into photographs that feel like you.

Long after the cake is eaten, including that one-year anniversary cake, your photos are what you will have left. Invest wisely. Choose someone you trust implicitly, someone who knows what matters to you, and someone with the skill to make every photograph a memory you can hold onto forever.

A great meal, a packed dance floor, meaningful music, and a team that lets you relax will always matter more than a detail that only looks good from one angle. Style matters. Connection is what makes it meaningful.

Leave room for real life.

Your wedding does not need to feel like a performance. Some of the sweetest moments happen outside the plan. A friend fixing the back of your dress. A flower girl taking her job extremely seriously. Your dad getting emotional before you are both ready. The two of you laughing during portraits because something went a little sideways.

Those moments are not mistakes. They are the story.

Build in a little breathing room if you can. Give yourself time to get ready without rushing. Take a few quiet minutes together after the ceremony. Let yourself step away from the party for one song and look around at all the people who showed up to love you.

Those are the moments you will feel forever.

The best wedding style feels like home.

The weddings that stay with me are not all the same. Some are colorful and loud. Some are refined and classic. Some are playful, minimal, glamorous, traditional, or completely unexpected.

What they all have in common is that they feel personal.

Fashion changes. Trends change. Your photos become part of your family history. They end up in albums, on walls, and in the hands of people who were not even there that day.

So choose what feels true. Choose what makes you feel good. Choose the details that make you say, “Yep. That is us.”

That is the kind of wedding style that lasts!

If you feel like yourself, you are going to look like yourself, and that is always the most beautiful version.

The goal is not to look perfect. The goal is to look at your photos years from now and think, yep, that was so us.
