Leading from the Soul: The Extraordinary Women Shaping Their Fields and our Community

Celebrating Women Who Excel, Inspire, and Empower Through Leadership and Compassion

Women are the visionaries who lead with strength, wisdom, and compassion. They are the backbone of families, and the driving force in communities. Women balance ambition with empathy, resilience with grace, and determination with an unwavering commitment to those they love. When shaping industries, pioneering change, or nurturing the next generation, women often redefine leadership by blending excellence with heart. A woman's influence extends beyond workplaces, reaching into homes and communities, where they uplift, inspire, and create lasting impact. Through their dedication, they prove that leadership is not just about power, it is about purpose, service, and the ability to inspire others to rise and uplift others in the process. In every role they embark on, women lead with love, forging a legacy of strength and transformation. In this Women’s Issue, we are deeply honored to celebrate these remarkable women who inspire us with their strength, vision, and unwavering dedication. We are incredibly fortunate to have such extraordinary individuals shaping the Pensacola community.

Connie Bookman: A Life of Service, Advocacy, and Transformation
Connie Bookman found herself at a crossroads, at 17,  while on a spiritual retreat at a Carmelite convent in West Palm Beach, Florida. She considered dedicating her life to becoming a nun, but came to realize that her true calling lay in social work. That revelation set her on a lifelong path of service, ultimately leading her to establish Pathways for Change in 2005.
Her career began as the director of a Christian counseling center, and a licensed clinical social worker. She was invited to teach at a local jail, where she worked with a group of 10 incarcerated women teaching them about communication, boundaries, healthy living, and self-improvement. She quickly realized, however, that upon release, these women returned to the same environments that had led them into the system in the first place. She became determined to break the cycle. She approached the jail’s director with a bold idea of creating an 18-month, faith-based addiction treatment program that addressed the root causes of incarceration.
In 2005, Pathways for Change launched its first long-term recovery program, providing incarcerated individuals with the tools they needed to rebuild their lives. Five years later, Connie expanded the organization’s reach, focusing on early intervention to prevent individuals from entering the criminal justice system. She opened a Family Center in a low-income neighborhood surrounded by three major housing projects, offering resources such as GED programs, parenting classes, and vocational training in fields like certified nursing assistance. In providing these opportunities, individuals were empowered to gain economic stability and independence.
Her work couldn’t end there. The understanding that homelessness and systemic poverty are profoundly connected to incarceration rates, Connie co-chaired the Homeless Reduction Task Force of Northwest Florida. She worked to break down barriers to housing and employment through partnerships with nonprofits, businesses, and law enforcement. She remains aN advocate for affordable housing, to ensure that sustainable solutions continue at the forefront of community discussions.
Connie maintains a strong sense of balance, despite any challenges she may face. She credits her “miracle morning” routine, a daily practice of meditation, prayer, and reflection, as the foundation of her resilience. This allows her to approach life with peace, clarity, and determination.
Connie, herself, has experienced profound personal transformation. Three years ago, the loss of her husband led her to seek new beginnings. Since, she has made a well-planned move to the beach, and embraced a chapter of self-discovery. She prioritizes her role as a grandmother, cherishing the opportunity to guide and inspire her granddaughter.
Mentorship remains one of Connie’s great passions. She maintains contact with several individuals who have gone through Pathways for Change. One woman from the program’s first graduating class continues to be a close mentee, testament to the lasting impact of her work. Connie emphasizes the importance of cultivating deep, meaningful relationships. She encourages women to invest in their friendships, knowing first hand that a strong support system is essential for personal and professional growth.
Connie remains committed to justice, opportunity, and transformation. Whether through Pathways for Change, the fight against homelessness, or mentorship, she is leaving an enduring legacy of service. Her journey is a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and a deep-seated commitment to changing lives for the better.
Her advice for the next generation of women is simple: “Don’t compare yourself to others. Focus on your own gifts, engage in your community, and believe in the power of positive change.” Her belief is that true success comes from self-awareness, civic involvement, and the ability to uplift others.

Christie Costello:A Legacy of Purpose, Community, and Faith

In the heart of Pensacola, Christie Costello has done more than build a business, she’s created a space rooted in generosity, connection, and unwavering faith. With a calling that came later in life and a heart for service, Christie’s journey is a powerful example of what it means to lead with purpose and serve with love.

Entrepreneurship wasn’t always in the plan. After retiring, Christie quickly found that slowing down didn’t sit well with her spirit. Restless and searching for fulfillment, she took a leap with encouragement from her husband, Darren, and opened what she envisioned as a small wine and cheese shop. That shop, however, quickly evolved into something far more impactful.

Today, Christie runs a full-service grocery store, but it’s not your typical business. “I want people to walk into the store and know they can buy the best of everything without overpaying,” she says. “My mission is to make high-quality food and products accessible to everyone. Not inflated, not out of reach, just honest, fair prices that people can feel good about. For my many loyal shoppers, whether they’re part of the neighborhood or driving in from across town, I want them to know they’re not just customers, they’re part of something bigger. They’re part of a community that gives back.”

Her store operates as a not-for-profit, where the mission is just as important as the merchandise. After covering expenses and paying her employees, every dollar of profit is funneled back into the community. Through this model, Christie helps feed more than 320 children and families each day.

That people-first mindset fuels everything Christie does but her work doesn’t stop at the checkout counter. Her deeper calling found its voice through The Kimberly Tauer Foundation (KTF for Love), a nonprofit she founded to serve those in need. The foundation provides food, mentorship, and support to families and individuals facing hard times, offering second chances and a renewed sense of hope.

KTF for Love was born from a profound spiritual awakening that reshaped how Christie saw her role in the world. “I used to think I had to do everything on my own,” she reflects. “But learning to say, ‘I need help,’ that changed my life.”

Faith is the cornerstone of Christie’s journey. It gives her the strength to keep going, the clarity to know what matters, and the resilience to face the inevitable challenges of service and leadership. One of the most meaningful moments in her life came when she guided her mother to faith before her passing. “Watching her surrender to Jesus changed my life forever.”

That experience deepened Christie’s desire to be a light for others, to make sure no one feels forgotten or alone. Whether she’s mentoring a young employee, bagging groceries for a struggling family, or simply being present for someone in need, Christie leads with heart, humility, and compassion.

“I love that my role as a business owner allows me to mentor,” she says. “Especially young people. I want them to know that with hard work, faith, and kindness, they can build something meaningful not just for themselves, but for others.” “I love what I do. I love who I am. And I wouldn’t change a thing,” she says.

For Christie, work-life balance doesn’t mean drawing lines between passion and purpose. It means aligning them. Her advice to young women is simple yet powerful: “When you feel that calling, follow it. Reach out, show up, and be the difference.”

Maria Goldberg: A Pillar of Pensacola’s Culture and Community

Maria Goldberg is a name synonymous with Pensacola’s vibrant arts, culinary, and cultural scene. As the Director of Marketing for Great Southern Restaurants, she has spent more than 15 years shaping the way Pensacola experiences food, history, and the arts. Her journey, marked by a deep love for culture and community, has made her an indispensable force in the city’s evolution.
Before her time at Great Southern Restaurants, Maria was already making a significant impact in the arts sector. As the Director of the Pensacola Museum of Art, she played a pivotal role in restoring its accreditation, a process that took over two years and opened the doors to world-class exhibitions. For Maria, what was accomplished wasn’t just a pivotal moment professionally; it was a labor of love that has and continues to enhance  Pensacola’s cultural offerings and relevance.
Her transition into the hospitality industry was unexpected but seemed a natural fit. Her longtime friend Collier Merrill, had recently acquired a restaurant and sought her expertise in revitalizing Jackson’s Steakhouse, in downtown Pensacola. Maria, with her visionary approach, introduced arts-inspired programming like jazz nights and symphony dinners, blending fine dining with cultural enrichment. The success of these initiatives led to her overseeing marketing for the entire Great Southern Restaurants group, uniting its establishments under a cohesive brand.
Integrating Pensacola’s rich history into Great Southern’s restaurants has been yet another proud, signature move of Maria’s. Five Sisters Blues Café, for example, celebrates the city’s rich blues legacy, while Angelina’s Ristorante pays homage to the Italian immigrant community. Through thoughtful touches, Maria creates  a dining experience that is more than just a meal, it’s an experience steeped in local culture.
Like many in the industry, during the  pandemic, Maria faced one of her greatest professional challenges. With restaurants shuttered and uncertainty looming, she had to pivot quickly. She and her team  launched innovative solutions like grab-and-go meals, delivery services, and online engagement strategies, all while prioritizing safety and sustainability.
Maria’s influence extends far beyond the restaurant scene. She serves on the board of Visit Pensacola, contributes to Foo Foo Fest, and most recently rolled off the board of ACE (Arts, Culture, and Entertainment). Her involvement in these organizations is a reflection of her belief that Pensacola’s identity is deeply rooted in its artistic and historical heritage.
When asked about her most cherished role, Maria emphasizes her passion for creating opportunities that leave a lasting impact. Whether through the arts, hospitality, or community service, she is dedicated to making Pensacola a better place to live, work, and play. For Maria, the city isn’t just where she resides, it’s a canvas she continues to shape, one project at a time. With her blend of creativity, leadership, and community spirit, she is not only preserving Pensacola’s cultural heritage but also propelling it into the future.
Maria takes great pride in her role as a mentor. She leads a team of talented,  young professionals, providing them the  guidance with the same generosity she received from her mentors. She strongly believes in the power of engagement, encouraging the next generation to immerse themselves in their community, whether through professional networks, volunteerism, or civic initiatives.
Her advice to aspiring professionals, especially women, is simple but profound: “Get involved. Speak up. If you show up, people will welcome you.” In a city like Pensacola, where collaboration is key to progress, Maria’s words serve as both encouragement and a call to action.

Dr. Sylvia Harris: A Force in Medicine and Wellness

Dr. Sylvia Harris is a physician, entrepreneur, and most importantly, an advocate for proactive healthcare. From a young age, as the member of a large family, she witnessed the toll of old age and illness and was inspired early to seek work in an arena where she could provide care and healing for others. Today, she specializes in functional medicine, and is dedicated to optimizing health and longevity.
Dr. Sylvia’s dedication to science and the human body blossomed early. However her journey was not straightforward and was fraught with challenges. She encountered gender bias, in medical school, with one particular professor whom she respected telling her she would never succeed as a woman. These words further strengthened  her resolve. “You define your own limits,” she says a lesson she now purposefully imparts to both her children and patients.
Believing that there is more to medicine than the traditional reactive model of healthcare, Dr. Harris champions preventative medicine. Her belief is that  optimizing wellness rather than merely treating disease is the key to longevity. This philosophy inspired her to develop Ageless, her own pharmaceutical-grade skincare line that addresses common concerns of aging with science-backed solutions.
Dr. Sylvia believes in the ability to treat her patients from the inside, out. She tailors advanced medical treatments to help patients maximize vitality. “Aging is not just about time, it’s about the choices we make,” she explains. Her work highlights longevity, resilience, and proactive care.
As she actively works to shift health paradigms, Dr. Sylvia believes in the power of knowledge. Here in Pensacola, she supports a culture of proactive care through speaking engagements, mentorship, and social media outreach. “Misinformation is rampant, but social media is a powerful tool for truth,” she says. “Health isn’t something to manage, it’s something to cultivate.”
Dr. Harris has faced systemic biases, and professional hurdles throughout her career, not to mention the work life balance with a family of her own. Nevertheless, she sees every challenge as an opportunity. “If it hasn’t been done before, then I’ll be the first,” she says, embodying the resilience that has helped buoy her journey.
Despite her professional accolades, Dr. Harris considers raising her children her most meaningful accomplishment. Motherhood has shaped her approach to medicine, instilling deeper empathy and patience. “If I raise good kids, I make the world a better place,” she reflects.
Balancing a demanding career and family life is a constant negotiation. “There’s no perfect balance only priorities,” she says. “But if I must choose, my family comes first.” Another important presence for her is that of faith. It is a cornerstone of Dr. Sylvia’s life, sustaining her through triumphs and losses. As a physician, she has witnessed good and bad. She has saved lives and experienced great heartbreak. Her faith never waivers and always keeps her grounded.
In talking about her values and the role her own mother played in her life, “I understand her now in ways I couldn’t before,” Dr. Harris reflects. “Her strength shaped mine.” In the same vein she shares with young women striving for success, “The sky is the limit. I stand on the shoulders of strong women, and I hope to be that foundation for others.” She believes that if you’re determined, you will succeed. “Success isn’t about luck, it’s about resilience. Keep pushing forward, even when it feels impossible.”
Dr. Sylvia Harris believes her mission is clear: to elevate, empower, and inspire, leaving behind a legacy of strength, innovation, and compassion.

Jane Lauter: Leading with Purpose, Serving with Heart

Jane Lauter is a woman of action who is truly committed to our community, and is often an inspirational force behind impactful initiatives. Her generosity know no bounds. Her passion for service is evident in the many causes she supports, from the Kugelman Foundation, and most recently the Sacred Heart Foundation. She also supports the Pensacola Oyster Bay Company and is co founder of Pensacola Mom Collective.  Each effort reflects her unwavering dedication to making a difference, whether through environmental conservation, healthcare advocacy, or empowering local families and women.

Her journey has been shaped by generations of community-minded individuals. Raised in a family that prioritized service, Jane has always felt a calling to contribute. Just as she valued her role as a full-time mother, she also recognized an deep responsibility to serve beyond, within the community. Championed by her husband, she stepped into roles that allow her to give back and maintain the life balance that her family needs.

The equilibrium requires, however, does not come without challenges. The demands of life often overlap, and requires constant adjustments. She credits her ability to manage it all to a supportive network of understanding friends, family, and colleagues. Learning to delegate within the push and pull of her responsibilities such as enlisting help to get her children to activities or creating space and time for personal and professional commitments, has been essential in nurturing  the passion that drives her without losing her sense of self.

Jane’s philosophy is clear: no act of service is too small. Whether it’s a five-dollar donation or a five-million-dollar initiative, every effort matters. She works to instill this ideology in her children and encourage others to see that serving your community is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Jane Lauter’s profound need to serve is deeply rooted in her unwavering commitment to family, community, and purpose-driven work. While she humbly believes her greatest achievements are still ahead, her journey so far is a testament to the power of authenticity and service. Guided by the deep set values instilled by her parents of kindness, responsibility, and giving back, Jane has chosen to dedicate herself to any initiative that strengthens the fabric of her Pensacola.

For Jane, success is not measured by accolades or station but by her profound dedication to society. She finds fulfillment in the upliftment of those around her, particularly women, always  voicing the importance of collaboration over competition. Fostering grace, resilience, and genuine support, and acknowledging that in unison, women can reach unprecedented heights.

Jane remains dedicated in her desire to always operate with sincerity. She values impact over prestige, a philosophy that extends to her guidance of the next generation. Her advice is simple yet profound: “create opportunities with integrity, celebrate others, and embrace the power of collective success.”

Her most important role to date? Jane identifies most as a mother. The values she instills in her children of compassion, resilience, and purpose are a small yet important part of the legacy she hopes to leave behind. Ever inspired by several notable women throughout history, including Eleanor Roosevelt, she truly admires individuals who have made lasting change in the lives of others.

With her heart geared for service and with an eye looking forward into the future, Jane’s journey will  continue to evolve. For her, success lies not in what she has achieved, but in the bright light she is able to shine on worthy causes and the positive change she can spark in the world.

Dr. Charletha Powell: A Life of Service, Leadership, and Vision

Dr. Charletha Powell is a dynamic force in Pensacola, shaping her community through civic engagement, business leadership, and a commitment to personal empowerment. Her background encompasses education, insurance, nonprofit work, and entrepreneurship. It’s a journey reflective of resilience, adaptability, and a profound passion for service.

As a recent candidate for City Council, Charletha remains a fixture in local governance and economic development. Serving on the City of Pensacola Planning Board and the FloridaWest Economic Development Alliance, she is helping to  shape the city’s future. In addition, her role on the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra’s governance board and the America’s First Settlement Trail board exemplifies her dedication to preserving and enriching the city’s cultural and historical identity.

Beyond her civic contributions, Dr. Powell is an entrepreneur with a keen eye for design and business innovation. She owns a loan signing business and runs Soluxe Interior Redesign & Staging, a company dedicated to creating spaces that reflect the essence of the people who inhabit them. Her passion for design, inspired by  childhood experiences, aids her process of transforming environments in ways that nurture spirit and function.

Charletha’s career can be defined by significant shifts, each fueled by a desire to meaningfully affect others. She began as an educator before transitioning into the complex arena of casualty insurance claims, where she oversaw high-stakes litigation cases across North Florida. The intensity of the role ultimately led her to another turning point. Charletha opted out of law school to pursue her doctorate. Her research focused on corporate diversity, exploring the challenges businesses face in creating inclusive environments across various dimensions, from disability to socioeconomics.

Her devotion to community upliftment extends beyond the professional arena. Whether leading church ministries or running a nonprofit for youth, to co-founding an all-boys school, she has continuously worked to invest in the next generation. Today, she continues to empower others, ensuring that knowledge and opportunities are accessible to everyone.

Dr. Charletha Powell is motivated by the belief that, “One can never go wrong by doing what is right.” She strives to be a guiding light wherever she goes, treating anyone she meets with respect, compassion, grace, and dignity. She rejects division, and is committed to creating opportunities for meaningful discussion that leads to action. She is passionate about ensuring that ideas translate into real change, always championing action over rhetoric.

Charletha feels that work-life balance is an intentional choice. She made a pivotal decision to not allow external negativity and pressure dictate her tranquil nature, gradually implementing self-care into her routine, that now is a non-negotiable part of her life. Understanding that balance is different for everyone, she encourages others to,  “find their own rhythm and commit to it.” At this stage in her journey, Dr. Powell prizes being the foundation of her own life, recognizing that all her roles stem directly from that core reality.

For the next generation of women in search of themselves, and driven to succeed, Dr. Powell emphasizes the importance of prioritizing self-care. She firmly believes that, “putting oneself first is not selfish but essential.” By scheduling time for herself first, she nurtures her ability to serve others effectively. She creates a space for herself where she is mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to take on the world. She encourages lifelong learning, whether through formal education, mentorship, or active participation in causes that matter. To her, complaints without action solve nothing. She emphasizes that, “women should be part of the solution in whatever capacity they can.”

Robin Reshard: A Storyteller’s Legacy in Pensacola

Robin Reshard’s journey as a storyteller, community leader, and historian is deeply rooted in the oral traditions she experienced as a child. Sitting at the feet of her parents and elders, she listened to stories infused with wisdom, humor, and resilience. It was precisely those moments that would shape her life’s purpose: to amplify voices, honor diverse experiences, and preserve history for future generations.
For Robin, storytelling is more than an art, it is an act of recognition, a way to affirm that every individual’s journey matters. Through her work in Pensacola and beyond, she seeks to illuminate the richness of untold histories, ensuring that marginalized voices are heard and valued. She believes that history is not just about singular narratives but a collective experience woven together by countless perspectives.
Her professional path has been defined by a commitment to vision over convention. As a bank manager, she challenged corporate norms by creating a welcoming, relationship-centered space for families, inspired by her managers guidance to serve the person in their entirety. Though initially met with resistance by a new manager, her vision was later embraced at higher levels, reinforcing what she always knew: true leadership is about seeing beyond the present and investing in the future.
Beyond any professional feat, Robin’s most profound achievement is her ability to listen to the past, to the present, and to the voices still waiting to be heard. She accepts her calling, that of a vessel for history, entrusted with carrying the legacies of ancestors forward with reverence. As a mother and grandmother, she finds the deepest fulfillment in nurturing a lineage of love, wisdom, and kindness within her own family.
A crucial part of her mission is cultivating the next generation of storytellers. She likens this to banking: making deposits of knowledge, experience, and wisdom so that, when the time comes, there is something meaningful to withdraw. She encourages those around her to embrace their own narratives, recognizing that history should never be about exclusion or singularity but about ensuring no one stands alone.
For Robin, storytelling transcends mere documentation, it is a spiritual calling. She honors the ancestors by carrying their voices forward, understanding that while human nature remains constant, the context of our stories evolves. She sees herself as a bridge between past and present, ensuring that the threads of history remain unbroken.
One story that continues to call to her is that of her great-great-grandmother Molly, who journeyed from Liberia to the United States in the 1860s. Molly’s story holds profound significance for Reshard. If given the chance, she would ask her one question: What kept you alive?
That question, in many ways, defines her work. Storytelling is more than the act of preserving history, it is about uncovering the deeper truths of survival, purpose, and resilience. The past is in part, the present.
Looking ahead, Robin envisages storytelling as a movement, not just another story to be preserved, but one that continues to evolve. With initiatives like the Pensacola Network and her work at the Kukua Institute, she is laying the foundation for a future where history is not just remembered but actively engaged with, where stories do not fade but flourish.
In the end, her legacy is not just in the stories she tells but in the lives she touches. She ensures that history is not confined to the past but serves as a guiding light, uniting, healing, and empowering generations to come.

Dr. Erika Schneider: A Life of Healing, Resilience, and Purpose
Dr. Erika Schneider always knew she was called to heal. Ever since she was a child, she watched  her grandparents transition from this life to the next and felt an innate pull toward medicine. An empath at heart, even then she was deeply attuned to the mind-body-spirit connection.

Raised in humble beginnings, Dr. Schneider’s journey to medicine was driven by an understanding that her role in the world would be one of care, compassion, and healing. From an early age, she believed in the philosophy of “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” She saved every penny, and when she completed high school, took a leap of faith, flying across the world to China. She immersed herself, for two and a half months, in a transformative experience. Living on the roof of an orphanage, she witnessed  challenges women were faced with, and solidified  her passion for women’s health.

Once back in Gainesville, she completed her undergraduate studies, medical school, and residency. She soon realized her deep interest in women’s health and her interest in surgery made obstetrics and gynecology a natural choice. Now in Pensacola, Dr. Schneider enjoys a community where word-of-mouth connections and relationships matter. She enjoys how Pensacola enables her to build lasting, meaningful relationships with the women she serves—patients who become friends, family, and an extension of her purpose.

The center of her work is deeply personal. She intentionally goes beyond expectations to leave a her mark on every patient, where she treats them as individuals as opposed to a name on a chart. Her goal is simple: for people to feel heard, valued, and empowered in their health journeys.

Dr. Erika Schneider’s journey is a testament to intentional living, resilience, and the pursuit of genuine fulfillment. Her experiences, both as a physician and as a mother, have shaped her perspective on success, balance, and happiness.

She and her husband made a bold decision in order to instill these values in their children: a year of minimalism and travel. Selling most of their possessions, they embarked on a life of simplicity, carrying two suitcases with five outfits each. Their journey around the world, reinforced a lesson they wanted their children to really embrace: happiness is not tied to material wealth. “You make more, you spend more, you have more, you want more,” she reflects. “But that’s not the life that will ever fill your soul.”

When it comes to work-life balance, Dr. Schneider has gained profound clarity: “The only place you’re not replaceable is home.” She will always remain deeply committed to her career, though she  acknowledges that success should never come at the expense of family. This has shaped her approach, allowing her to realistically set boundaries and continue to prioritize the people she loves most.

She most identifies with being a mother, always  embracing the challenges and joys of raising three children. “I won’t get it right, but my goal is to not get it wrong.” She holds deep admiration for the next generation they are redefining success, and challenging the norms. She is hopeful they are also learning from those who came before them.

Dr. Schneider’s advice for young women echoes this philosophy. She urges them to block out external pressures and societal expectations, to chase their own dreams not someone else’s. “Be proud of who you are. Don’t try to be who somebody else is,” she emphasizes. In an era continually dominated by social media and external validation, her belief is that self-awareness is instrumental in unveiling personal aspirations.

Margo Stringfield: Unearthing Pensacola’s Past to Shape Its Future

Margo Stringfield’s passion for history and preservation has been a lifelong affair. With a captivating enthusiasm for unearthing stories buried in the city’s landscape, she has been dedicated, over her career, to ensuring that all historical and cultural heritage is not just remembered but actively engaged with by the community.
Margo’s curiosity was sparked in childhood, when accompanying her father on land surveys. Often she and her brother would stumble upon arrowheads and pottery fragments. This would later shape her professional path and deep seated fascination with history. In earlier years, she found herself immersed in historic preservation and museum work. Though, not until in Pensacola, as her children grew, did she feel able to embark on the career she continues to thrive in today. The University of West Florida’s historical archaeology program, is where she truly cemented her place in the field.
The first graduate of the program, Margo quickly became a dedicated steward of Pensacola’s deep rooted history. Her work spans the many eras that make Pensacola unique, British colonial Pensacola to the early territorial period. One of Margo’s greatest contributions is in historic cemetery preservation. In 1999, following an act of vandalism at St. Michael’s Cemetery, her efforts to protect and restore the site, lay the foundation for a citywide commitment to preserving burial grounds as vital historical records. Her work expanded to include African American cemeteries, in 2013, where she and her team uncovered, preserved, and recorded cultural traditions with roots that trace back to West Africa.
Margo considers cemeteries as archives of the past, relaying the history of a community’s evolution. Through her work, she hopes to leave Pensacola with a profound appreciation for its complete history, dedicated to preserving its cultural identity for generations to come. The book, Historic Pensacola, that she cowrote with John Clune, Jr., is a fine example of Margo’s dedication to documenting and sharing important local history.
Other highlights and defining moments in Margo’s career include her work on the Emanuel Point Shipwreck, the 16th-century Spanish galleon San Juan, that provides invaluable insight into some of  the earliest European exploration. It provided not just a professional milestone for Margo, but a rare and deeply personal connection to the past. She wonders what greater value could have come from modern technology if those findings were unearthed today.
In commemorating Florida’s Bicentennial in 2021, marking the transition from Spanish rule to being received by Andrew Jackson as part of the United States in 1821, Margo played a key role. Despite the challenges of the pandemic at the time, the celebration successfully honored this pivotal moment in Florida and American history. Margo continues to champion efforts to ensure that Pensacola’s historical contributions receive the appropriate recognition. With the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, she fully expects a renewed spotlight on the Gulf Coast’s strategic role in securing American independence.
Beyond her professional achievements, Margo’s life is guided by values instilled by her parents, respect for all people, an open mind, and a dedication to service. She believes in breaking down barriers with kindness and persistence, fostering meaningful connections in both her work and personal life finding great fulfillment in the simple joys, whether it’s fly fishing with family, or immersing herself in the soothing strains of Pachelbel.
For young women coming up in the world, Margo encourages that they balance passion and practicality. She advises them to “engage in meaningful work, even if it begins as a side interest,” and emphasizes the importance of mentorship and uplifting of others.

Dr. Maria Toledo: A Legacy of Excellence in Neuroscience and Life

Dr. Maria Toledo’s journey into medicine was inspired by her grandmother and great-aunts, all physicians during a time when few women entered the field. She felt called to follow in their footsteps. What was initially a passion for helping others developed into a passionate pursuit of advancing neurosurgery and neuroscience, to ensure patients receive the highest level of care.
Her life’s journey has been defined by continuous self-improvement in both the precision of surgery and in the aspect of genuine patient care. “Being a better surgeon isn’t just about technical skill,” she reflects. “It’s about being a compassionate caretaker.” This axiom has guided her every step, and shaped her role as both a healer and an advocate for advancing neuroscience.
Beyond surgery, Dr. Toledo is devoted to elevating neurological care in Pensacola. As a advocate and leader in the field, she has aided in building a system that serves to provide world-class stroke care, ensuring that patients who are generally unable to travel for treatment receive the level of complex care they need locally. “The goal is to continually refine and expand our capabilities so that Pensacola becomes a recognized leader in neurological care,” she says.
Dr. Toledo is immensely proud of her decision to pursue dual specialties, an strenuous path and requires three additional years of training beyond the standard seven. “Not many people are willing to take those extra years, but it has complemented my work in ways that make it invaluable,” she says. Her tireless commitment to excellence has enabled her to provide a broader, more comprehensive approach to patient care.
While continuing to excel professionally, one of her greatest challenges was personal during the demanding years of medical training, she became a mother. “Nothing prepares you for motherhood,” she admits. “I didn’t expect it to change my entire perspective, but suddenly, nothing mattered more than my daughter.” Her experience almost led her to walk  away from her hard earned career. Through the guidance of strong female mentors, however, she was reassured that she could be both dedicated mother and successful neurosurgeon. “They told me she would look up to me one day and that’s exactly how it turned out,” she says with pride. “Motherhood is number one for me,” she states without hesitation. “Then wife, then doctor. Of course, I value being a daughter, sister, and friend, but being a mother will always come first.”
Away from medicine, Dr. Toledo is moved by a strong sense of civic responsibility.“Being a responsible, conscientious citizen is just as important as being a skilled professional,” she states. Her credo is simple: a thriving community is built on individuals who uplift one another, both personally and professionally. She continues, “Whatever happens in one area of your life will reflect in the other. If you’re struggling personally, it will impact your work, and vice versa. You have to nurture both equally.”
To the young women of tomorrow, seeking to have a fulfilling career, Dr. Toledo offers an empowering message: You CAN have it all. “You just have to be incredibly determined, organized, and hardworking,” she advises. We are often told in society that women must choose between career and family, but she firmly believes in the power of balance. “You can have a thriving career, a loving family, and a fulfilling personal life. It’s all possible with the right mindset and dedication.”

Shalini Verma: Building a Legacy in Construction and Community

There isn’t anything traditional about how Shalini Verma found herself amidst the construction industry. Her career began as a registered nurse, she never envisioned herself in construction. However, after moving to Pensacola, she realized she wanted a career that offered both flexibility for her family, and a sense of accomplishment for herself. Her simple interest in home renovations quickly morphed into a full-fledged business, and lead her to establish Yellow Hat Construction in 2019. Today, Shalini is a licensed general contractor and roofer, with commercial and residential projects across Florida, with ambitious plans to expand into Alabama and beyond.

Shalini found herself in construction due to her desire to create something tangible, something that would stand the test of time. She enjoys taking an idea, transforming it into a blueprint, and ultimately bringing it to life. Though construction is seen as male-dominated, she has never been deterred. Instead, she embraces the challenge, proving that success in the industry is determined by knowledge, skill, and determination rather than gender.

Many women hesitate to enter construction due to its reputation for being tough and competitive, though Shalini’s experience has been different. Her success she attributes to the relationships she has built with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients. “I never felt out of place,” she explains. “From the beginning, I was treated with respect because I approached the work with professionalism and a willingness to learn.”
Her leadership style is deeply rooted in respect and teamwork. Her philosophy is  that, “a great contractor is only as good as the people they work with.” That’s why she focuses on building strong relationships with her subcontractors. “When you respect people and value their expertise, they’ll go the extra mile for you,” she says. This has helped Yellow Hat Construction grow steadily, where its earned a reputation for quality work and reliability.
Shalini is also extremely passionate about addressing the growing need for affordable housing. Many families, young professionals, and veterans continue to struggle to find homes within their budget. With this in mind, she envisions developing high-quality, cost-effective housing solutions that provide stability and comfort without sacrificing design or durability. She hopes to collaborate with local officials and investors to make this vision a reality.
For Shalini, construction is about building communities. Every project has the ability to improve lives, whether it’s a family’s first home or a commercial space that helps a small business thrive. This mindset keeps her motivated, pushing her to take on new challenges and innovate within her field.
Looking to the future, Shalini envisions Yellow Hat Construction expanding its reach, taking on larger projects, and making an even greater impact in the housing sector. She remains dedicated to her mission of creating sustainable, affordable, and high-quality spaces for people to live and work. Her journey is proof that with hard work, vision, and the right team, anything is possible.
At her core, Shalini Verma is a problem-solver, a leader, and an innovator. Her story serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to break barriers and pursue their passion. “Success isn’t about where you start,” she says. “It’s about where you’re willing to go.”
Shalini continuously seeks out opportunities to expand her knowledge, whether through certifications, networking, or mentorship. She encourages other women to step into industries where they may be underrepresented, emphasizing that confidence and perseverance are key. “Don’t let fear hold you back,” she advises. “Surround yourself with the right people, keep learning, and believe in your ability to succeed.”

Kimberly Watson: A Leader in Law, Philanthropy, and Community Impact

Meet Kimberly Watson. Her dedication to local philanthropy, and community empowerment is leaving its mark on Pensacola in a big way. As co-founder of a burgeoning law firm, and The Watson Family Foundation, she is building a legacy for her family defined by service, resilience, and leadership.

Her faith is the driving force that provided her with the vision and drive to embark on the founding of The Watson Law Firm, with her husband, while expecting twins. It was a bold and decisive move, with immense risk, but they believed in their mission. They stayed the course and persevered and now, the better part of a decade later, The Watson Firm is well known within the law community and our Pensacola community at large. It is that same deep faith and dedication in the work they do that drove Kimberly to see further afield to the great need of the underserved in Pensacola. The Watson Family Foundation was established as a vehicle for supporting families, addressing food insecurity and uplifting the underserved in our community.

Her service and leadership style is fundamentally  shaped by her faith. It forms the basis for her approach to giving back and provides her the clarity and strength to navigate any challenge that may arise. Her dedication to philanthropic efforts is evident in the foundation’s initiatives, one being an annual turkey giveaway that has fed thousands. The foundation is also central to the Juneteenth Festival, an important addition to the line up of local festivals educating the community and fostering cultural pride while providing scholarships and exposure to the arts. “I hope to inspire others to give back,” she says, acknowledging that true impact is measured not just by individual contributions but by how a community lifts itself.

With little prior experience in large community event planning, she navigated logistical challenges with the initial organizing of the inaugural Juneteenth event, from securing permits with the city, to organizing volunteers. It is testament to character that in the first year, the financial demands were handled internally as well. Through established relationships and by rallying community support, she transformed these hurdles into a sustainable model for collective giving with maximum impact and in turn affirmed the ripple effect of her efforts.

Kimberly measures success not by her personal or professional achievements, but by the lessons of stewardship and community care that she is consciously providing for her children. Having them partake in the journey of service to the community, ensures that they are learning the power of hard word, dedication and generosity, firsthand. “Watching them light up when they see the impact we make is my greatest reward,” she says.

Despite the many demands on her time and energy, it is family that continues to be her focus and driving force. “Being a wife and mother comes first,” she says. She finds balance by ensuring a meticulous schedule, that allows time for everything including dedicated time for her children, date nights with her husband, and personal fulfillment. “You have to make time for yourself,” she insists. “Whether it’s art, travel, or simply unwinding, self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.”

For young women seeking guidance, Kimberly provides a powerful perspective: If it scares you, do it. “The biggest rewards come from stepping outside your comfort zone. If you don’t try, you automatically fail so why not take the risk?” She encourages women to embrace ambition, take one step at a time, and recognize that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.
