Lessons in Joy

How The Buckingham creates a rewarding lifestyle for grateful seniors.

Just outside downtown Houston, a community of seniors live a deliberately independent lifestyle at a distinctly luxurious destination. It’s called The Buckingham, and it’s long been home to some of the city’s most accomplished retirees. This group of dynamic seniors have found a place that allows them to continue the vigorous lifestyle they love.

Among these active residents, Philip Baker has finally found time to pursue a passion he’s been waiting more than 25 years to pursue. Philip developed an interest in woodworking ever since watching his father work around a carpenter shop when he was a boy. Now, the colorful boxes and decorative pieces he handcrafts with exotic woods grace the coffee tables of fellow residents and adorn the halls of The Buckingham.

Without The Buckingham’s woodworking shop and maintenance-free, amenity-rich lifestyle, Philip says he may not have had the opportunity to reconnect with his father in this way. “Time’s a wasting,” Philip says. “Living here, you can do what you want to do with your whole day. They don’t put demands on your time so you’re free to do what you want to do.”

Like other residents, Philip feels the community’s team members are the key to the exceptional lifestyle he enjoys. “I haven’t found anything that anybody wants to do here that they’re not able to. The staff is just amazing accommodating our needs or desires. Whatever you want to do is probably right here.”

Philip is one of many residents determined to turn gratitude into action. “One of my great joys here is raising money for the employee appreciation fund. Being able to collect money from all the generous residents and say thank you to these dedicated people who make sure our lives are so comfortable, is a great joy.”

Philip wishes he could bring more people into the community to experience it for themselves, so they can see The Buckingham is nothing like retirement communities their parents may have lived in. “It’s truly a charming living experience in which we have the freedom to do what we want to do,” Philip continues, “and more people need to know about it.”
