To say that John Capra is proud of his son is a wild understatement.

Zachary Capra was born and raised in Colorado. He was a devoted athlete, playing ice hockey, lacrosse, and golf. After graduating from Mountain Range High School in 2011 he joined the United States Navy, serving four years aboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman. Zachary completed 2 tours in the Persian Gulf, and during that time he became inspired to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot.

In August of 2016, after his commitment to the Navy was complete, Zachary attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. On April 4, 2018, his journey to become a commercial airline pilot was tragically cut short when he lost his life after the small engine plane he was flying crashed.

In honor of his son’s legacy, John started Tailwinds of Hope, a nonprofit with a mission to award annual scholarships to aspiring pilots.

“Zach inspired people to follow their dreams and it is the family’s hope that scholarships given in his name will support others in achieving their dreams and living an abundant life.”
