For more than 20 years, the Friends of Henderson Libraries have ushered in the holiday season with their beloved Library Tree Lane events. What began in 2004 as a gala with decorated Christmas trees and an auction that raised $3,000 has blossomed into one of Henderson’s most festive community traditions.

“This event has such longevity in our community—it truly kicks off the holiday season,” said Marcie Smedley, Executive Director of Henderson Libraries. “It’s become a tradition for many families in Henderson.”

The Holiday Boutique, now a centerpiece of the celebration, offers themed baskets assembled by dedicated volunteers. In 2024 alone, Library Tree Lane raised $48,500 to support Henderson Libraries’ programs and materials—resources that remain free for all to enjoy.

Unlike many holiday markets that feature multiple vendors, the boutique and gala is a volunteer-driven effort from start to finish. Supporters and local businesses donate items ranging from gift cards and gourmet treats to spa essentials and sports gear. Volunteers then curate each donation into themed baskets, ensuring that each one contains a carefully chosen book to tie the theme together.

“The baskets really do have something for everyone,” Marcie explained. “From cooking at home to self-care, sports to dining out, each collection is meant to feel both personal and festive.” These baskets make popular hostess gifts and holiday surprises—items that are both thoughtful and purposeful.

The heart of Library Tree Lane lies in its mission. Proceeds directly fund children’s programming and materials at Henderson Libraries, enriching the experiences of young readers and learners throughout the community.

“Every dollar raised goes back into the library system,” Marcie noted. “We’re proud that these programs are free for the community, but it takes events like Library Tree Lane to make that possible.”

Beyond dollars, the event builds connections. Attendees meet neighbors, share food and wine, and bid on treasures while celebrating the spirit of giving.

Over the years, the response from Henderson residents has been enthusiastic. Many return annually, treating the boutique and gala as an essential part of their holiday season.

“People love coming together here,” Marcie said. “It’s not just about the baskets—it’s about community.”

Looking ahead, the Friends of Henderson Libraries are committed to growing the event. “We’ll continue to plan and try new things,” they said. “From raising $3,000 in the beginning to more than $48,000 last year, the growth speaks for itself.”
