A New Chapter for Rescue Animals

Former North Shore educator Gary Scholar turns his love of storytelling into a children’s book that champions compassion for rescue animals.

Gary Scholar is turning a lifelong lesson in compassion into a new chapter. Through his newest children’s book, Sing Fur Love, Scholar hopes to inspire young readers to care for vulnerable animals while helping more rescue dogs and cats find safe, loving homes they deserve.

For Scholar, the book brings together the worlds that have shaped his life: education, creativity, music and a deep devotion to animals.

“I was a teacher for a number of years, and then I was an entrepreneur,” Scholar says. “I decided to channel my creative side and become a children’s book author.”

His years working with children on the North Shore, particularly students in kindergarten through fifth grade, taught him the power of imagination and the lasting impact of lessons absorbed at an early age.

“Kids use their imagination so much,” he says. “That’s how they shape their views of the world.”

With Sing Fur Love, Scholar hopes one of those lessons will be kindness.

Inspired by his own childhood and the compassion for animals instilled by his parents, the story follows Sadie, a rescue dog, and Binky, a rescue cat, as they learn to trust and love again after difficult experiences. Foster twins Kylie and Brody open their hearts to the animals, helping Sadie and Binky find a second chance while showing young readers how they, too, can advocate for animals in
their communities.

A portion of proceeds from each copy will support animal rescue and adoption organizations. While researching the book, Scholar visited shelters to better understand the challenges rescue organizations face and the animals in their care.

“I want to make a real difference in the lives of countless voiceless, vulnerable dogs and cats,” he says. “This is my life’s work going forward.”

Now based in Deerfield, Scholar is extending his passion for storytelling in another direction, taking on clients as a children’s book coach and helping aspiring authors bring their own stories to life.

For Scholar, Sing Fur Love is ultimately about more than finding a forever home for an animal. It is about helping children recognize compassion, find their voices and discover that even the smallest act of kindness can have an impact.
