Since 1949, The Arc of the Capital Area has been dedicated to supporting the IDD community across 17 counties in Texas. The organization strives to help everyone it serves live authentically, with equal opportunities for all.
“What makes our approach unique is our commitment to listening and adapting. We actively seek feedback, and use it to improve and grow our programs,” says Olivia Gutierrez, Director of Employment and Education. “This ensures that we’re not just meeting the needs of today but are also preparing for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.”
The Arc maintains a focus on convenient and accessible community engagement, with the Art and Education Program as a key initiative. This provides adults with IDD a platform to express their creativity, culminating in gallery sales three times a year to celebrate the artists’ talents.
Volunteers are essential to The Arc’s mission, participating in events like the galleries and day programs hosted at their locations in Leander, Hutto, and Austin.
“Whether it’s helping prepare supplies, working one-on-one with our artists, or simply joining in on the fun, volunteers play a crucial role in creating a positive environment,” says Gutierrez. “We’re always excited to welcome new faces!”
Gutierrez, along with fellow directors Celina Maddox and Caleb Alford, emphasize the importance of making connections to raise awareness. Witnessing individuals finding their voice and gaining independence is profoundly humbling and inspiring to them. It’s thanks to funding from their ever-growing supporters.
“Every day, we get to see people break through barriers and achieve things they might have once thought impossible,” says Gutierrez. “Knowing that we’re empowering over 1,000 individuals each year isn’t just a number—it’s 1,000 stories of growth, joy, and determination.”
