Old design trends don’t always age gracefully. Faded upholstery, hanging threads, and sagging cushions are signs that a tired sofa might not be able to hide behind some cheery throw pillows to face another season. While it may be tempting to disguise last decade’s sofas with seasonal throw blankets, what you really want out of the family room is a feeling of living in the now. Let’s explore some summer design ideas that will get you really excited about current seasonal trends. Summer trends in furniture tend to lean toward focusing on the family rooms that welcome guests in to be a part of the family.
Rooms with a brighter look are in. Families want something new, light, and bright to sit in. If you’ve had the same sofa for a long time with age spots beginning to show, it’s time to look into giving your family room, living room, or office a summer facelift. Replace antiquated furniture items with custom-designed pieces that meet current design trends.
Furniture customization expressing one’s personal unique style and looks beyond the common furniture pieces typically found on Amazon or in traditional furniture stores is a design trend expected in 2020. Another current design trend consists of European-inspired designs with German and Italian influences found in the sloping arms of couches, knife-edge pillows, and chairs with metal legs. This is a fun romantic look with lots of curves and slopes in earthy tones that feel very modern and tasteful.
Here’s what interior design experts are saying about furniture trends for the 2020s.
“We’re seeing brands lean into the idea of custom more and more, and that will be no exception for the design industry,” says design historian and VP of Style at Modsy, Alesandra Wood. “I think we will continue to see the notion of customization via shape, color, and pattern define how we shop in the '20s.”
“Performance fabrics are a must—they have changed the way we live by making every room functional for the entire family, says Los Angeles based interior designer, Lonni Paul. “They could be used in the messiest of family rooms, but also in luxurious living and dining rooms while maintaining a fashionable aesthetic.”
Serving the Community
The Sofa Shop in Yorba Linda, owned by the Leontas family, is the local maker of superior custom furniture at affordable prices. When businesses were shutting down, they stepped up to serve the community by shifting a great portion of their manufacturing to produce cotton masks for essential business workers. “We have been allowed to continue to produce furniture for our clients,” says Jim Leontas, “and we continue to employ many people, which is a great blessing.”
Running a great business runs in the Leontas family. “My father emigrated from Greece and started with nothing,” Jim says. “He owned three restaurants and was an extremely hard worker. He worked hard to give his family a better life than he had... and with a solid education! He was also a role model for me by always treating his employees with respect and kindness and his customers with generosity.”
Jim started producing furniture in 2000 through a partnership between the designers and builders who started the South Orange County master-planned community of Ladera Ranch by providing much of the furniture for their model homes. “We opened our first store, Comforts of Home, in Laguna Hills in 2002 and now celebrate our 20th year in business. We have weathered many storms, but I am proud of my family for always keeping God first and having unbreakable faith that we can get through anything.”
The Sofa Shop showroom on Imperial Highway in Yorba Linda is open for convenience for shopping in person with a sales and design consultant. They are also preparing to roll out an online store so clients can shop and check on their orders from home, and it all starts with personal taste and good design!
