July in McHenry County can feel a little overwhelming in the best possible way. Between parades, festivals, lakefront concerts, and fireworks shows, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate summer and the Fourth of July. The challenge isn’t finding something to do, the challenge is deciding which tradition, town, or event to take in on any given night. From long-running community festivals that stretch over multiple days to simple, family-friendly fireworks at the park or beach, each town offers its own take on summer celebration. This guide highlights six family-fun events to help narrow the choices and make planning a little easier. 

Crystal Lake

Lakeside Festival returns July 2–5 at the Dole grounds, combining carnival rides, live music, food vendors, and family activities with one of the county’s biggest fireworks displays. Woodstock
