You’ve heard it said again and again: When you look good, you feel good. It is the fashionista’s excuse for spending a little more on their shopping spree. But what if the truth goes both ways? When you feel good, you look good. Here’s the truth–taking care of your health is in style. One way you can champion your health this fall is to make chiropractic care a part of your lifestyle. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic outperformed all other back pain treatments in a consumer survey. As you’ll soon learn, chiropractic care has more benefits than back pain alone–it just might save your life.
To learn more, Parker Lifestyle chatted with Dr. Skylar Baku. Dr. Baku recently founded Baku Chiropractic and Functional Medicine to be a beacon of hope to those in chronic pain and a premier source for preventative care.
1. What motivated you to get into Chiropractic care?
I originally got into chiropractic care because my childhood chiropractor practically saved my mom’s life. Our chiropractor was more like a general practitioner to us. We went to him for just about every ailment. When I was about 9, my mom suffered from a handful of “random” symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, aches, hair loss, and digestive problems, to name a few. My chiropractor suggested that she should get her thyroid checked. So, she went to a medical doctor who prescribed her antibiotics for a sinus infection.
Then, my mom returned to our chiropractor. Once again, he urged her to get a second opinion on her thyroid. After the second opinion, she found out she had thyroid cancer. Thankfully it was treatable, and she is alive and well. Soon after, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the natural healing profession. Today, my life’s work involves helping others heal without drugs or surgery. In my opinion, both drugs and surgeries are overprescribed (though they can be necessary at times.)
2. Does your practice have a focus of care?
We have two! The first is to help people heal from illnesses like the thyroid disease my mom had. The other focus is to help people who suffer from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (previously known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). CRPS is a severe pain disorder typically caused by physical trauma such as a sprained ankle, fracture, or surgery. The pain caused by CRPS can be severe and debilitating. One of the best ways to help reduce pain in these patients is to stimulate their Vagus Nerves frequently.
3. Who should see a chiropractor? How can chiropractic care enhance their overall quality of life?
Over the years, I’ve heard many people say, “My back doesn’t hurt,” or “I don’t want to get my neck cracked.” On the contrary, chiropractic care balances and maximizes brain and nervous system function. Imbalances in the brain and nervous system cause symptoms such as fatigue, a weakened immune system, brain fog, digestive problems, poor moods, anxiety, depression, sugar cravings, and pain. These aren’t warning signs– they are typically late indications of an imbalance.
When the brain is out of balance, the body always follows. This leads to damage, degeneration, and disease. Chiropractors help balance and maximize brain function. When the brain and nervous system are balanced, they function better. The results are abundant energy, a stronger immune system, better digestion, improved sleep, better moods, reduced anxiety and/or depression, reduced sugar cravings, better mental clarity and focus, and of course, reduced pain. Who wouldn’t want that?
4. What do you and your wife like to do for fun?
When we aren’t working at the practice, my wife, Susy, and I love spending time with our family and pets. We have two cat rescues and a Doberman rescue that occupy our time. We are also expecting our first child (baby girl) in October!
