Melissa Glynn’s journey into photography didn’t follow a traditional path. Her mother, recognizing a creative spark, gifted her a camera for her twentieth birthday, even though Melissa hadn’t shown an interest in photography. At first, it was just a hobby, but it soon became her greatest success. What began casually grew into a thriving career. After moving to Austin in 2005, Melissa faced many challenges, from navigating a recession to starting her photography business from scratch. With no financial support, building her business wasn’t easy, but with determination and resilience, she persevered.
Melissa has thrived through difficult times, including the pandemic, and made bold career changes, like stepping away from wedding photography in 2022, leading to her most successful year yet. Reflecting on her journey, Melissa takes pride in mentoring and supporting other women-owned businesses. She applies this same dedication to her work, whether capturing professional headshots, family moments, or commercial projects. Her commitment to telling her clients' unique stories is at the heart of her approach.
You specialize in headshots, commercial photography, and family sessions. How do you approach each one to tell the subject’s story?
I approach every session with the same goal: to capture authenticity. Whether it’s a headshot or family session, I don’t bring a specific agenda. I want to reveal the true personality of each person, letting their individuality shine through in every image.
Headshots are often a professional’s first impression. How do you ensure yours are impactful?
The most important thing I need to know is their industry and how they want to be perceived. In Austin, we have more freedom in how we present ourselves. Our city isn’t rigid, and neither are its people. From attorneys to tech CEOs, therapists to hair stylists, I ensure each individual is portrayed in a way that feels best to them.
With the holidays coming up, how do you make each family session unique?
This is my FAVORITE time of year! I’ve photographed families for nearly 18 years and focus on capturing their true dynamic. I make kids feel at ease so their personalities shine, and I encourage families to embrace who they are—quirks and all.
What advice do you have for those who feel nervous in front of the camera?
Honestly, I’d just say: hire me! I create a relaxed environment, helping people feel comfortable like we’re just having a conversation. It’s all about building trust and making them feel confident.
Photography tells powerful stories. Can you share a memorable project that had an impact?
I’ve worked on many impactful projects, from St. Jude’s charity events to photographing foster children for Austin Angels. One of the most personal projects was photographing a dear friend before she passed from cancer. Those photos became a cherished gift to her family and fiancé. Whether it’s for an organization or a family going through loss, preserving these moments is incredibly meaningful.
