It’s hot and sticky, which means it’s swim season y’all! Whether it’s a lake, ocean or pool, taking a dip to cool off is something we will likely take advantage of this summer. But confidence in the water helps the little ones in our lives enjoy splashing and swimming the safest way possible. We sat down with Goldfish Swim School-Franklin’s owner Lincoln Walden to learn how they nurture water safety and confidence that will last a lifetime.

Goldfish Swim School is known for its vibrant, child-focused environment. How does your curriculum go beyond swim safety to build lifelong confidence in young swimmers?
At Goldfish, we’re not just teaching water safety, although it’s our top priority. We’re also helping kids build life skills that go far beyond the pool. Our award-winning curriculum was designed with our Science of SwimPlay approach in mind, blending swim technique with social-emotional development like confidence, resilience and goal-setting. Each small win in the water is celebrated in a big way. When kids hear “You got this!” during a lesson, they carry that confidence into everything they do.

Can you share a specific story or moment when you saw a child transform through your swim program, not just in skill but in spirit?
I think of two young boys who were terrified of the water and wouldn’t even put a toe in the pool. After consistent lessons, both learned to swim freestyle across the entire pool. Seeing their smiles made it clear how proud they were to conquer that fear. Their confidence soared, and that transformation was unforgettable.

Your facility uses a warm-water pool and fun décor. How do these elements support your mission of fostering comfort and confidence for kids?
From the moment families walk in, everything is designed to spark joy, comfort and trust. Our 90-degree shiver-free pool and tropical, colorful setting help kids feel relaxed and excited instead of anxious. These details reduce fear and make learning feel like fun, laying the groundwork for safe and confident swimmers.

Parents often talk about the joy their children find in swim class. How does Goldfish make learning feel like play?
Fun is essential to how we teach. When kids are having fun, they’re more engaged and open to learning. We use themed lessons, imaginative swim techniques and playful progress tracking to create a joyful experience. We celebrate every milestone, so children stay motivated and build real skills while enjoying themselves.

Many children begin swim lessons with fear or hesitation. What approach does your team use to build trust and independence, even in the most nervous beginners?
We meet every child where they are, using patience, encouragement and our signature “You got this!” attitude. Our instructors are trained to build trust gradually, using positive reinforcement like high-fives and ribbons. Consistent routines help turn nerves into confidence. We celebrate every brave moment, whether it’s going underwater or graduating a swim level.

Your instructors are known for their training and patience. What qualities do you look for in a Goldfish team member, and how do they shape a child’s experience?
We look for people who embody our core values and genuinely want to make a difference. Our team is made up of Wavemakers—individuals who bring purpose, energy and empathy to every shift. All instructors complete certified training and ongoing development, but it’s their heart and passion that truly impact each swimmer. They cheer the loudest, connect on a personal level and help kids discover their potential, one swim at a time.

How does Goldfish keep parents informed and involved in their child’s progress?
We believe communication is key. Parents receive real-time progress updates through our mobile app, weekly instructor feedback and have access to comfortable viewing areas. We also celebrate progress with ribbons and report cards. Our team is always available to talk through next steps or offer customized support. We’re here for the kids and the parents, because we know families thrive when everyone feels encouraged.

How do your programs support growth beyond swimming, such as promoting discipline, focus and self-esteem?
Our swim lessons are about much more than safety. Kids learn to set goals, stay focused and persevere—even when a task is tough. They also develop teamwork and communication skills. Over time, these small lessons build big confidence. You can see it in their smiles and pride when they master a skill. These are life lessons they carry far beyond the pool.

Why is water safety important, even for families who don’t live near a pool or lake?
Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children under age 4, and it can happen in seconds, anywhere water is present. That includes bathtubs, backyard pools and travel spots. Swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88 percent. At Goldfish, we’re committed to increasing access to lessons and educating families in the Franklin, Tennessee, community and beyond. Our goal is to help every child feel safer and more prepared around water.
