Masciadrelli and Son Heating & Air Conditioning: Building Customers for Life

The motto of Westfield-based Masciadrelli and Son Heating & Air Conditioning is “We strive for nothing less than customers for life.” When Greg Masciadrelli opened his business nearly 36 years ago, he began laying the foundation for that level of success.

Now in its fourth decade, Masciadrelli and Son has established a thriving business that serves customers from one end of the state to the other – including some customers who have been with him since he started in 1989. Greg and his son, Jack, along with a third professional, Garrett Purdy, install, maintain, and repair heating and cooling equipment for residential and commercial clients.

Jack is a 2020 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, completed an HVAC program through Springfield Technical Community College, and recently earned his general contractor’s license. He’s been working by his dad’s side since he was in high school and is now a full-time employee. Jack looks forward to growing Masciadrelli and Son while maintaining the strong relationships that he and his dad have established with their existing customers. For now, Greg has no plans to slow down. “I’m going to work until they tell me to go home,” jokes Greg. “I enjoy doing it. I love working with my son. At some point it will be all his.” The two men live and breathe the business – talking shop 24/7 in some cases. “We’ll come home from work and talk about it at the dinner table,” says Jack.

Living at home and working with a parent could be a challenge for some folks, but not for these men. Jack is enthusiastic about working with his father. “I enjoy it a lot. We definitely have fun, a lot of laughs,” says Jack. “He’s easy to work for.” Their rapport seems to make up for the less enjoyable aspects of their work, like spending long, hot days in customers’ attics during the summertime.

With Jack and Garrett on board, Masciadrelli and Son can take on larger jobs. They serve both commercial and residential customers, recently wrapping up work at The Greens, a new housing development in Southwick. Masciadrelli and Son has done installations as far away as Cape Cod. “A lot of times when we go down to the Cape, we never get to see the ocean,” notes Greg. “We’re in people’s basements the whole time.”

Greg acknowledges the personal nature of being in a customer’s home and always gives customers a heads up on what to expect from the service call, including which employee will be in their home.

The field has changed quite a bit since Greg launched the business in 1989. “The equipment is much more efficient,” says Greg. Rebates from utility companies are more widely available, and ductless mini splits for heating and cooling are very popular – offering lower cost to install and run compared with traditional central air conditioning. The Masciadrellis envision a time when technology will play a larger role in the analysis aspect of their work, but the repair side will always remain a hands-on process.

Masciadrelli and Son is looking forward to a future of growth in its second generation. If Greg ever does retire, Jack is ready to take over. For this business, family just works.
