When Sophia Kelleher’s parents suggested that she combat her anxiety by helping others, she embraced the idea. She designed a logo and launched “The Kindness Fairy” on YouTube to document how she spreads kindness in the community. She posted her first video in March, just as New Jersey was shutting down due to the pandemic. Undaunted, Sophia, now 12 and in sixth grade at Eisenhower Intermediate School, decided to focus on cheering people up during this stressful time.

In her first video, she used her allowance to buy five $10 Starbucks gift cards, which she gave to random people at the mall. In other videos, she participated in a drive-by birthday celebration for a 6-year-old she learned about on Facebook, donated a dog bed and bleach to the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter and made “thank you” signs for healthcare workers at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, the Green Knoll Fire Department, the Bridgewater Police and ShopRite workers.

Sophia also produced a three-part series on teacher appreciation: hanging a “thank you” poster on her fifth-grade teacher’s window as she was cleaning out her classroom; delivering a sign, balloons and a plant to her third-grade teacher on her birthday; and giving another teacher a gift basket and serenading her with “You’ve Got a Friend.”

Sophia’s work inspires her friends to perform kind acts as well. She encourages people to follow her lead and send her photos and videos of how they are spreading kindness to her social media accounts or email to be used in her new series “The Kindness Champions of the World.” Her goal now is to attract sponsors to fund her efforts to help people in need, such as buying groceries for food banks. “I just want to make people feel special,” says Sophia.
