MATT SURBER

Lead Pastor of Mission City Churches Matt Surber has dedicated his life and calling to teaching God’s word as a way to know His character and how we lead our lives. Pastor Surber’s church communities undertake a Man and Ministry monthly program where they feed underserved families. Groceries and sundries are delivered each month with a collection box available where parishioners can donate items. The members of the church also help out with physical needs of widows, seniors and other people in the community.

Pastor Surber’s wife is a realtor and they have two boys, both involved in sports in high school and college. “We all know that we have been blessed and that it is our responsibility to give back to our community.” To view messages or to listen to Pastor Matt’s messages you can go to www.missioncity.church/media.

ERNIE PYLES

Another great example of a resident in the area who donates their time to local organizations is Ernie Pyles. He is happy to call this area home for the last 18 years. He and his wife Karen have two adult daughters, Miranda and Katherine. Since retiring in December 2018, Karen and Ernie have volunteered their time in a variety of areas. Some of those beneficiaries of their time and talent include Hill Country Family Services, Kendall County Women’s Shelter, Primarily Primates, and Boerne ISD.

A retired Lieutenant Colonel, Pyles served on the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees and has chaired the long-range steering committee twice. “My passion is supporting Boerne ISD in whatever volunteer capacity helps the District move forward. Our Kids, Their Future!”

When asked what inspirational words he lives by, Pyles quoted Winston Churchilll, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” “The need for community service in the Boerne area continues to grow each year.”

BOERNE CHIEF OF POLICE STEVE PEREZ

Steve Perez was sworn in as the sixth Chief of the Boerne Police Department on February 25, 2022. Chief Perez was born and raised in San Antonio. He began his law enforcement career in 1998 with the Alamo Community Colleges District Department of Public Safety. In 1999, he joined the City of Boerne as a police officer.

Chief Perez serves on several local nonprofit organizations as a board member. Chief Perez has been married for more than 21 years to his wife, Kathleen. They have two sons, Diego and Max. Although Chief Perez has always been active with his sons coaching their sports teams, he has a little more fixed schedule so he can spend more quality family time. “My sons have always known the life with a police officer, whether I was on the streets or as an investigator always on call.”

The Chief is proud of the Department and has welcomed the chance to promote officers and hiring good, quality people to serve Boerne residents since his promotion in February.

BENNETT KENNEDY

President of the Champion Athletic Booster Club (CABC) at Champion High, a realtor for Phyllis Browning Co. and the Jason Glast Group, Bennett Kennedy is passionate about giving back to his community.  CABC’s purpose is to raise funds to support the athletic programs at Champion. The parents and volunteers in the Booster Club work hard to raise around $160 to $180K annually through the local business sponsorships and membership in CABC for the fourteen teams.

Kennedy’s wife Vicki, volunteers for several non-profits in Boerne and the surrounding area and has raised several million dollars for Magdelena House. Their sons participate in sports at Champion and are called to give back as well. “It is our social responsibility to share our blessings” says Kennedy. The couple also founded Bass Club of Champions for those middle school to high school children who may not be interested in school sports teams, but want to feel connected to the school and community. The programs provide students the opportunity to fish in six tournaments regionally against other clubs.  They also participate in service programs.
