Just hearing the term “general store” calls to mind images of strong, resilient, working men gathered on porches, around a stove or barrel socializing, spinning stories, sharing life. This social hub of old acted as a community gathering spot that carried a quiet magic for men, young and old, where memories were made and America shined.
Micah and Caroline Raposo are recreating that uniquely American setting in Cottleville with Men’s Modern General Store, but with a modern twist.
“Men’s Modern General Store is a fresh reinvention of the traditional general store concept — crafted specifically for modern men who value quality, style and functionality,” Caroline says. Rooted in the rugged spirit of hard work and timeless craftsmanship, the store serves as both a curated retail destination and a lifestyle brand that speaks to men’s need for reliable, purposeful gear.
“We aren’t just about products — we’re about building a culture,” Caroline says, adding that it’s a place where men can shop with pride, find like-minded community, and trust that everything they purchase holds up to a higher standard.
Caroline states they want their store to be a place men “want to visit, hang out in and rely on.”
Their social media pages say things like: “If you love pocket knives and personal growth, you may want to follow us,” and “We believe a man’s gear should be as reliable as his word.”
Reliable, American-made gear and goods from small businesses across the country is exactly what they sell, all, in their words, “because men deserve nice things, too."
From pencils, tools and pocket knives, what they call Everyday Carry or EDC items, to spirits and spices, hot sauces and hot honey, canvas and leather wallets, bags and beard care items, the Raposos offer goods meant to be used and weathered.
Each item of décor in Men’s Modern General Store is “a testament to the old days,” Micah says, “where products are built to last.”
The Raposos are also bringing back the joy of in-person shopping, the ability to feel materials, ask questions and discover new favorites with guidance, almost a lost art in today’s largely Internet-based shopping experience.
“Our store is more than shelves,” Micah says. “It’s a space to connect and try-before-you-buy. We love the face-to-face experience, providing education about our products and the opportunity to see and feel quality in your own hands.”
The Raposos have created a “community” that's quickly becoming a place to be in Cottleville. The lounge brings community together, whether visitors are sipping the hand-selected single barrel pick bourbon, reading, attending a tasting workshop, playing a game of chess or meeting like-minded men.
The Raposos host small gatherings in the “Men’s Modern Lounge & Pool Table” area of the store. Each month, they hold tastings, highlighting a different Missouri brand of bourbon, giving patrons chances to experience the craftsmanship, the story and the people behind each brand.
They host Men’s Community Nights on the First Friday of every month, where authentic friendships and intentional masculinity are cultivated over a drink, a pool table or chessboard among new and old friends and plenty of banter.
Men’s Modern General Store also holds Missouri bourbon tasting classes, fun date nights, such as Mahjong classes, and pocket knife meet-ups.
Micah says his store is a place where growth is expected and challenges embraced. “There’s something powerful about choosing to do the hard things, especially the things that held you back for most of your life.”
Micah has dealt with a stutter for as long as he can remember. For years, he says, it shaped what he avoided, what he held back from, and what he believed was possible. Before opening Men’s Modern he made a decision that stuttering didn’t matter anymore.
He started leaning into the uncomfortable, speaking more, challenging himself. He began to let go of old limiting beliefs and grow in his faith.
“Men’s Modern General Store was built on the belief that becoming a stronger, better man isn’t about perfection,” he says. “It’s about doing the work. It’s about facing the things you’d rather avoid, practicing vulnerability and choosing growth anyway. We believe in building good men, men who show up, who push themselves, and who refuse to be limited by fear or past struggles.”
“We believe a man’s gear should be as reliable as his word,” says Men's Modern General Store founder and owner Caroline Raposo.
