Mentorship: An Investment in the Future

At Executive Women’s Alliance, Students Take Ownership of Their Success

We are pleased to showcase the Executive Women’s Alliance (EWA), a not-for-profit organization in Montgomery County that is making a profound impact on the lives of young women. EWA is a dynamic network of professional, managerial, and executive women dedicated to mentoring and empowering the next generation.

In 2007, EWA launched the Women of Vision (WOV) Mentoring Program at Conroe High School. EWA Director of Communications Ryan Mathes shared that the initiative expanded to Oak Ridge High School in 2024, now serving approximately 65 students in grades 10 through 12. Participants commit to monthly meetings, engaging in carefully curated activities and community service projects. These sessions expose students to diverse post-high school educational and career paths, equipping them with the tools to navigate their futures with confidence. Upon completion of the program, graduates have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to further their education.

The program’s focus is to enhance the self-esteem and self-image of female high school students through presentations, personal development, and leadership lessons. Students are introduced to a wide range of educational and career opportunities, while learning to take ownership of their success. From confidence-boosting mock interviews to fashion shows highlighting professional attire, young ladies in EWA’s programs gain the skills to shine in the spotlight. Its goal is to educate female high school students by providing strong role models, promoting wise decision-making, and empowering them to achieve their goals.

EWA’s mission and vision encapsulate its dedication to shaping the leaders of tomorrow:

"We inspire the next generation by mentoring young women, encouraging their entry into the workforce, and providing scholarships to support their education. . . . We envision a future where young women are empowered with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to excel in their chosen fields. . . .”

The importance of mentorship cannot be overstated. It is a catalyst for personal growth, professional development, and long-term success. Here’s why investing in mentorship transforms lives:

·       Confidence and Self-Esteem: Mentors help young women recognize their strengths and cultivate the confidence needed to pursue their aspirations.

·       Exposure to Success: Learning from accomplished professionals provides real-life examples of achievement, inspiring mentees to set ambitious goals.

·       Expanding Opportunities: Mentors introduce young women to invaluable connections, opening doors to internships, scholarships, and career growth.

·       Building Leadership and Resilience: Through mentorship, young women enhance their emotional intelligence, leadership skills, and perseverance — essential traits for navigating life’s challenges.

Ryan Mathes emphasized the valuable exposure mentees receive through career panel discussions: "Women of Vision mentees gain insights from career panelists during sessions. Mentors share their experiences and answer questions from the young women, representing a wide range of professions —from hair salon owners to finance experts to physicians —all detailing their journeys into their fields."

Mentor Natalie Saikowski Goertz shared a heartwarming story that underscores the lasting impact of mentorship. Over a decade ago, Natalie began mentoring a Conroe High School student, whom we’ll call Bethany. Their connection grew beyond the program, and once Bethany graduated WOV, Natalie and her husband welcomed Bethany into their lives. Today, Bethany is a proud University of North Texas graduate, a dedicated social worker assisting special needs students, and is now applying for a master’s program.

Natalie continues to support Bethany by connecting her with seasoned social workers to help her advance her career. In a full-circle moment, Bethany returned as an inspiring speaker for current EWA members, sharing her journey and wisdom. As she embarks on her master’s program, Natalie will assist her in applying for EWA scholarships, reinforcing the enduring value of mentorship.

Mentorship empowers young women, creating a future where they can thrive and uplift those around them. We commend the outstanding work of EWA and encourage you to learn more about their mission at ExecutiveWomensAlliance.org.
