This fall, expect to see colors beyond the expected palette of orange, rust, and gold. Deep plum, saturated blue, and unusual textures are entering the mix, giving seasonal arrangements a moodier, more sophisticated character without losing the warmth that makes fall decorating so inviting.
So says Mandy Blissit of Blume Haus, who brings an experienced eye to these evolving styles. “An event isn't complete until we add the flowers,” she says. “They completely transform the space and represent the couple or host as a source of beauty and pride.” She should know. Her career began in wedding coordination and event management before she developed an in-house floral program at a Hill Country wedding venue.
In 2014, Blissit branched out as Blume Haus, where she now focuses exclusively on floral design for everyday occasions, weddings, and events. “Florals are part of how our community shows each other that they are thought of, cared for, and loved,” she reminds us. “It’s meant to bring joy into their life, and it’s an honor to be a part of that.”
Fall’s Emerging Palette
Among this season’s strongest trends is a rich, dark plum, sometimes introduced through a surprisingly versatile flower: the carnation. Far from basic grocery-store staples, these blooms offer distinctive color and generous fullness without dramatically increasing an arrangement’s cost. Blissit particularly likes a copper-toned variety, which she describes as a “purple rusty penny.”
Deep blue takes center stage in fall designs through hydrangea, delphinium, and thistle. Thistle adds both color and texture, serving as an accent in what Blissit calls a dependable floral recipe: statement flowers, accent flowers, filler, and greenery. Blume Haus uses that structure to keep proportions consistent while adapting each arrangement’s colors and textures to its recipient or setting.
Design Like a Pro
For seasoned hands who want to arrange their own flowers at home, Blissit offers a straightforward starting point. “Make a small bouquet of greenery and rubber-band it together. Then plop it in your vase and add your flowers,” she says. “Start with your biggest flowers first and work your way down to the small filler flowers.” She recommends designing in odd numbers, using a classic triangle or star pattern for an easy visual balance throughout.
As fall turns toward winter, seasonal palettes make the same expressive shift. Mauve pink has emerged as a chic alternative to traditional reds and greens, while deep navy paired with gold creates a particularly luxurious effect. Navy lends velvety richness, while gold introduces warmth and light.
And don’t forget the vessel to complete the story. A vase or container in matte gold, brown, or black adds understated depth, while highly polished gold produces a brighter holiday glow.
“An event isn't complete until we add the flowers. They completely transform the space and represent the couple or host as a source of beauty and pride.”
