More Than a Haircut Scout's Barbershop · Chattanooga, TN

Celebrating Growth, Community, and the People Behind Scout’s Barbershop

For Scout’s Barbershop, a haircut has never been just a haircut.

It can mark the first day of school, a graduation or a new job. It can become part of a family routine passed from one generation to the next. And sometimes, it can accompany one of life’s most difficult moments.

Those connections have been at the heart of Scout’s since owner Brooke Allison opened the first location in 2014.

After moving to Nashville to open Hot Yoga East Nashville, Brooke discovered a gap in the local market. Haircut options tended to fall between big-box stores and salons with lengthy waits. She envisioned something different: a neighborhood shop combining skilled professionals and exceptional service with a welcoming atmosphere.

Scout’s became Nashville’s first unisex barbershop, designed from the beginning as a place where everyone could feel comfortable.

Twelve years later, that neighborhood concept has grown into 11 locations across Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga, with nearly 200 staff members. Yet Scout’s remains locally and women-owned, with each shop shaped by the community it serves.

“At its core, Scout’s is a place for everyone,” said Devin Cox, director of growth for Scout’s Barbershop. “We believe in putting people first, being an integral part of the neighborhoods we serve, taking pride in the craft, and creating a space where everyone feels welcome.”

Chattanooga represented an important milestone as Scout’s first market outside Nashville. After opening its first Chattanooga shop, the company expanded to a second location in the area.

But growth at Scout’s extends beyond adding locations.

In 2016, the company launched Haircuts for Humans, an initiative supporting organizations throughout Tennessee. Through partnerships with groups including the Martha O’Bryan Center, Backfield in Motion and Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Scout’s has raised more than $400,000 to help students, families and neighbors.

The greatest impact, however, can sometimes be found in the everyday moments between clients and team members.

Scout’s employees have watched children who once chose a sucker after their haircut grow up, graduate and leave for college. They have seen clients arrive single and later return with spouses. They have celebrated milestones with longtime customers and supported others through difficult seasons, including clients who entrusted Scout’s with shaving their heads before beginning chemotherapy.

“To some people, a haircut might seem like a small thing,” Devin said. “To us, it marks a moment.”

As Scout’s looks toward continued growth in 2027, preserving those human connections remains central to its plans. In an increasingly automated world, the company sees even greater value in an experience built around conversation, relationships and craft.

And during this season of gratitude, Scout’s is especially thankful for the people behind its growth, the employees who bring each shop to life, the clients who return to its chairs and the neighborhoods that have welcomed the company.

“We get invited into people’s lives in a very small but very personal way, sometimes for just 30 minutes at a time,” Devin said. “Over the years those moments add up.”
