More Than Jaw Pain

Warr Dental’s comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating TMD

It starts with an afternoon headache that arrives daily like clockwork. It's followed by a clenched jaw, a stiff neck and ringing ears.

Many people dismiss these symptoms as stress-related or assume they're simply part of getting older. Others spend years treating migraines, ear pain or neck tension without ever discovering the true source. But what many don't realize is that temporomandibular disorder (TMD), a condition affecting the jaw joint (TMJ) and surrounding muscles, can trigger a surprising range of symptoms that quietly erode quality of life.

"It's a sneaky disorder that kind of creeps in bit by bit over time," says Dr. Warr of Warr Dental in Millcreek. "People don't realize that a small filling, a missing tooth or even a slight change in their bite can throw the position of the jaw off."

That seemingly minor misalignment can lead to headaches, jaw fatigue, ringing in the ears, neck pain and even blurred vision. Yet because the symptoms often appear unrelated to oral health, patients frequently seek answers from multiple specialists before anyone evaluates how their jaw is functioning.

For some patients, the path to relief has included visits to neurologists, ear, nose and throat specialists or providers. Warr says that history makes a detailed functional assessment important. In addition to imaging the head and neck, the practice uses jaw tracings to observe movement and identify patterns that may not appear during a dental exam. By examining how the bite, muscles and joints work together, the team can better understand why seemingly separate symptoms may share one underlying cause.

Warr Dental offers a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating TMD that sets the practice apart.

"We don't ignore the teeth, the muscles or the joint," Dr. Warr says. "You have to evaluate all three if you're going to get a patient comfortable."

Using state-of-the-art technology, including 3D CBCT imaging, real-time T-Scan bite analysis and surface electromyography to measure muscle activity, the team can pinpoint the source of dysfunction instead of simply treating symptoms.

From there, every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, whether that means a protective appliance, orthotic therapy or a more comprehensive rehabilitation designed to restore proper jaw function.

"No two cases are exactly alike," Dr. Warr says. "The diagnosis follows the same process, but every treatment is customized to what that patient needs."

For Dr. Warr, the goal extends far beyond relieving jaw pain. It's about helping people reclaim the everyday moments chronic pain has taken from them.

"Chronic pain affects how you live your life," he says. "We're changing the way people are able to function during the day. They're sleeping better, chewing comfortably and living normally again."

After more than 30 years caring for patients in the Salt Lake Valley, Dr. Warr says the most rewarding part of his work is the relationships built along the way.

"Our patients trust us with their health, and that's incredibly rewarding," he says. "The relationships we've built with our patients are what I'm most grateful for."
