For many men, a doctor's visit happens only when something is unmistakably wrong. Preventative care, hormonal health, and sexual wellness often fall to the bottom of the priority list, dismissed as unnecessary, too personal, or simply not discussed. But according to Dr. Kat Lofley, nurse practitioner and founder of Renewal Aesthetics and Sexual Wellness, that mindset is quietly costing men their vitality, confidence, and long-term well-being.
“Men are underserved and undertreated,” says Dr. Lofley, whose career spans urology at a VA hospital's Male Sexual Dysfunction Clinic to advanced training as a women's health nurse practitioner and certified nurse midwife.
“I wound up in urology by accident, but I loved it,” she observes. “Having that background in men's health is part of what positioned me in private practice as the only provider that I know of who specializes in both men's and women's health. I really enjoy being able to not only serve both men and women but also couples. It’s a unique and fulfilling opportunity.”
The Testosterone Truth
One of the most urgent—and widely misunderstood—areas of men's health is testosterone. Research suggests that the general population today produces roughly 40% less testosterone than their counterparts did only a few generations ago, a decline driven by environmental hormone disruptors in plastics, pesticides, and the food system, among other factors.
The problem goes deeper than low numbers. “What we see on a lab report is a reference range, not a normal range,” Dr. Lofley explains. “It was created based on averages, not on what is physiologically optimal.” A man at the low end of that range may be told he's perfectly healthy, yet that lower end can reflect the testosterone levels of a 90-year-old. Feeling and functioning at one's best typically requires levels toward the higher end of the spectrum.
In addition, testosterone affects far more than sexual health. Energy, mental clarity, mood, motivation, fat loss, lean muscle gain, and resistance to anxiety and depression are all connected to healthy hormone levels. Dr. Lofley works with each patient to find their unique level.
“A healthy testosterone level is different for each individual,” Dr. Lofley notes. “It should be where a man feels and functions at his best. So, what I do is work toward the functional and optimized level for each individual.”
Sexual Wellness Is Health, Not a Luxury
An individual’s sexual health is often treated as an elective concern, something optional, even embarrassing to address. Dr. Lofley challenges that framing. “Sexual wellness affects the psyche of men in ways that are deeply connected to their identity and overall well-being,” she says.
She utilizes an effective procedure using a patient's own platelet-rich plasma called the P-Shot (Priapus shot). Having performed the treatment since nearly its inception, Dr. Lofley has refined her protocol to achieve a nearly 100% response rate. "It's been life-changing for a lot of men," she says, especially those who had already tried conventional options and felt they had run out of choices.
At the core of what Dr. Lofley and Renewal Aesthetics do is offer an integrated approach to health and wellness. “I want to be able to treat my patients not just with hormones or aesthetics or sexual wellness solutions but with a combination of approaches that are designed to fit their unique needs in a comprehensive way.”
Confidence Inside and Out
Men are also seeking aesthetic treatments in growing numbers; they're simply quieter about it. At Renewal Aesthetics, Dr. Lofley sees men for laser skin resurfacing, neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport, and treatments that address skin quality at the root rather than just masking concerns. For Dr. Lofley, aesthetics isn't about vanity, it's about empowerment. Her guiding principle: The best results are the ones no one notices. “You simply look like the most refreshed version of yourself,” she explains.
Whether the goal is reclaiming energy through hormone therapy, addressing sexual health, or looking and feeling one's best, Dr. Lofley's message is clear: Men deserve comprehensive, personalized care. “I just want to shout all of this from the rooftops,” she says. "And we’re trying to make it as accessible as possible."
