Last fall Heather Walsh, a former TV producer with a long history in reality television, took a leap of faith and co-founded Mother Nature’s Landscaping and Design with her business partner Sergio Sanmiguel. This new venture was the culmination of Heather and Sergio's passion for nature, her desire to create beautiful outdoor spaces, and her commitment to being near her family.
Heather’s journey into the world of landscaping wasn’t the typical path one might expect. With a decade of experience in TV production, including roles with MTV’s Teen Mom, TLC’s Unexpected, and the hit show Love After Lockup, Heather had spent most of her adult life in the fast-paced world of television. She loved her work but found herself longing for a life that allowed her to spend more time at home with her children. She was always drawn to the outdoors, even from a young age, and wondered how she could turn this passion into a career.
"I grew up in West Hartford and spent much of my childhood outside. But working in Manhattan for years, I didn’t have a yard, and I really missed being outside,” Heather shares. “During the pandemic, I had more time to reconnect with nature. I found joy in landscaping and taking care of the land—it became a form of therapy for me."
Sergio was on the same page. After years of television work, including a stint on Animal Planet, Sergio was ready to step away. Together, they realized they could build a business that combined their love for the environment and nature with their skills in design and project management.
"Before meeting Heather, I was always outside, whether it was working on a show or just spending time in my own backyard," Sergio recalls. "I noticed the difference that high-end landscaping and creative outdoor spaces could make in people’s lives. That’s when I knew we had the opportunity to create something special."
Mother Nature’s Landscaping, a full service landscaping company including design, construction and maintenance, was born out of this shared vision, but it has quickly become more than just a landscaping company. While Heather’s focus has been on providing exceptional design and outdoor spaces, Sergio has brought his expertise in transforming yards into functional and beautiful living spaces.
“We want people to enjoy their outdoor areas as extensions of their homes, not just spaces that are neglected or left unused,” he says. “We incorporate everything from gardens and seating areas to create environments where people can host events or simply relax with their families.”
What sets Mother Nature’s Landscaping apart from other landscaping companies is their commitment to creating beautiful, functional spaces while emphasizing quality and perfection.
“We don’t just mow lawns and blow leaves. We design. We care about every detail, and it shows in our work,” Heather says.
A key part of their mission is to empower women, especially single mothers, by offering job opportunities in a field traditionally dominated by men.
"I didn’t want to just be another landscaping company, most of which hire men," Heather explains. "We’re actively hiring women, especially single moms, who are looking for flexible work opportunities. It’s about helping people reconnect with their outdoor spaces and, for me, it’s about giving women opportunities in a field where they’re often underrepresented," Heather says.
Since its unofficial launch in the fall, Mother Nature’s Landscaping has made a mark here. From designing front stoops for holidays to creating stunning event spaces, the company has earned a reputation for transforming outdoor spaces into something special.
Their collaboration with Tina Kiniry Management, a local talent agency, on a fall fashion show last year is just one example of how they are expanding into event design.
The local community, Heather says, has been supportive of their new venture.
"We are so appreciative of all the support we've received from the community and would like to give a special shout-out to Scott Lewis from Lewis Realty for helping us make our dream a reality."
While they're committed to growing their landscaping busines, Heather and Sergio have also established their own television production company and started a podcast.
Landscaping has become more than just a business—it’s a way to feel grounded, embrace nature, and create something that brings joy to others, they say.
"I just get so much happiness from being outside, working with my hands, and from creating something beautiful," says Heather.
