Among the many gyms and athletic clubs that Franklin has to offer, Mpact Sports is unlike any other. Eric Melton, a former world welterweight kickboxing champion, and wife DeeAnn Melton, a second-degree black belt, founded Mpact Sports in 2002. After retiring from his full-time career, Eric felt the calling to teach martial arts. Having come into some gymnastic equipment through their daughter’s training, the couple decided to combine martial arts and gymnastics training under one roof. “The two trainings can go hand in hand, so we decided to put them together and have been moving along ever since,” said DeeAnn.
The center offers a long list of classes for the whole family from Taekwondo, to Tricking, a combination of tumbling and martial arts kicks, to Fight Club Fitness, a self-defense class that incorporates title boxing. Students benefit from more attention and instruction in the smaller classes offered at Mpact. Typically, there are no more than eight children in a class. Outside of classes, the center also hosts special events such as Nerf Wars Saturdays, a summer camp that is currently underway and birthday parties.
Together, Mpact’s staff and the members make a special team all the way down to the beta fish in the bowl at the front desk. “There are about 25 people employed here, and we’re all a family. It’s a really great group,” said DeeAnn. In that spirit, there is no “I” in the word “team,” so there is no “I” in the name Mpact Sports. The staff is working overtime right now to keep themselves and their members safe and healthy by incorporating a variety of sanitization methods and healthy practices into their daily routines.
