Music and Imagination Collide

How the Art That Blows is turning retired instruments into a future of belonging

What happens to a trumpet that can no longer play a note? Or a violin that played in its last show? In the music world, this is a heartbreaking moment for any musician, but The Band of Angels takes these “unplayable” instruments and turns them into masterpieces with a mission.

Since 2014, the Band of Angels has been taking retired instruments that once served a dedicated musician and turning them into something new–creating opportunities for young musicians to experience the power of music. Through Art That Blows, instruments are reimagined as works of art, each piece carrying a story while helping write new ones for the next generation of musicians.

“I love that the Art That Blows brings together a diverse group of people in one spot,” Mike Meyer, founder of The Band of Angels, said. “A wide range of people attend, from young to old, and it’s truly a community event. Art is amazing, and it brings the city together to celebrate creativity, community, and connection.”

That connection is what makes this event the largest fundraiser of the year for the organization.

Creating a Place to Belong

For many students, attending summer music camp isn’t possible due to financial barriers. Each piece of art auctioned at the Art That Blows becomes a direct opportunity for local students to receive a scholarship, allowing them to pursue their passion for music.

“Being able to experience a week of summer camp is not only a week of learning,” Mike shared. “It’s a chance to be surrounded by others who share their passion, build friendships, and feel a sense of belonging.”

So far, The Band of Angels has provided over 750 scholarships, helping students deepen their craft while growing in confidence and connection. The funds raised through Art That Blows are what make these life-changing experiences possible.

For the students impacted, these scholarships represent more than just a week of practice, they represent belonging. “Having the opportunity to attend music camp allows students to immerse themselves in music and become part of a community they can truly call their own,” Mike said.

Join the Summer Fun

On July 10, 2026, music will meet imagination at The Abbott during Art That Blows. Guests can enjoy food trucks, student talent showcases featuring Band of Angels artists, and one-of-a-kind artwork you won’t see anywhere else.

“The Art That Blows is more than a fundraiser, it's the best summer party in the Crossroads,”  Mike shared. “The event brings a wide range of people together in one space, proving once again that art and music have the power to unite a community.”

In the end, it all comes back to the instruments. What once made beautiful music is given a second life, transformed into works of art that help open doors for the next generation of musicians.
