Musical Memories

Chandler Teen Shares her Love of Carnatic Music With the World

Love of music typically begins for people at a young age and can evolve as you grow. For Chandler Preparatory Academy senior Manasa Subramanian, her love of one certain type of music has taken her on travels all over the world.

Subramanian has been singing Carnatic music—an ancient form of classical music from South India—since she was very young. This style of music is something that she has been around all of her life.

“Carnatic music was first introduced to me by my mother, Usha Ramachandran. She learned the style when she was my age and continues to teach and promote the art form in Chandler.”

Subramanian says from the beginning of her musical roots, she has found deep inspiration in her music.

“Carnatic music helps me feel more connected to my rich cultural background. It inspires me that I can continue to build on what has been around for thousands of years,” she says.

Recently, Subramanian got to take her musical talents on the road for an amazing trip touring India.

The young performer spent much of her winter break earlier this year touring India, where she performed 12 shows in just 16 days. She performed in grand concert halls, and one of the highlights of the tour was a performance at a renowned hall in New Delhi, where she performed in front of a huge audience, sharing her soul-stirring renditions of Carnatic music.

Subramanian shares that, through her travels, she has grown to love the beauty of being able to connect with different people and share her music with them.

“Some of my fondest memories include singing and getting to interact with senior citizens and doing concerts in support of underprivileged and disabled children and senior citizens. It is always a joy to know I can brighten someone’s day with my music.”
