Converting Cities into Zero Waste Communities

“Be the change!” is local resident and Zero Waste owner Leonardo Brito’s motto.

Started in 2019, Leo, a Venezuelan-American recognized the need for alternate accessible options to dispose of yard and food waste and divert them away from landfills.

Zero Waste’s goal is not only to reduce waste but to take waste that can break down and feed it back to the earth. To achieve this, they provide convenient curbside pickup services collecting food waste right from your doorstep.  Zero Waste then works with Nature’s Way, a local composting facility to combine it with yard waste from the community to create compost filled with valuable nutrients that they use in landscaping projects to close the loop on the food lifecycle.

Last year, Zero Waste collected and diverted over 23,000 pounds of food waste through just an 8-week pilot with West University Place! The program was so successful that they recently started a program in The Heights and plan to start these initiatives in more communities around the greater Houston area.

In The Woodlands, Zero Waste has partnered with Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) to provide residents an opportunity to learn about food waste diversion as well as an easy responsible way to dispose of their food scraps and other compostables. The free drop-off is offered every Saturday at HARC’s location off Gosling Rd.

Zero Waste collects compost from residential as well as commercial organizations. They work with The Houston Zoo, The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, The Woodlands Children's Museum as well as private schools around Houston to reduce their environmental footprint. They even offer a self-service option at Artisan Culture, a local eco-friendly coffee shop.
