For more than 15 years, Naatiya Indian Restaurant has invited Greater Hartford diners to explore the rich diversity of Indian cuisine, with a particular emphasis on the distinctive flavors and traditions of South India.
Naatiya opened in Bloomfield in 2010 with a vision that went beyond simply serving a meal. Owner and Head Chef Kannan Muthuvel wanted to create a welcoming gathering place where guests could experience authentic Indian food alongside the warmth and hospitality that are central to Indian culture.
“The inspiration behind opening Naatiya Indian Restaurant came from a passion for authentic Indian food and a desire to create a place where people could experience the flavors, warmth, and hospitality that are such an important part of Indian culture,” he says. "I wanted Naatiya to be more than just a restaurant,” he says. “I wanted it to be a place people would feel comfortable returning to, where great food and hospitality went hand in hand.”
Kannan's connection to food began when he was growing up. Meals and family traditions were closely intertwined, he says.
“Food was an important part of our family life. I developed an appreciation for the traditions, flavors, and care that go into preparing a good meal.”
Running Naatiya has also meant learning every aspect of the business, from cooking and customer service to managing a team and understanding what guests value most.
“The most rewarding part is seeing customers enjoy the food, come back with their families and friends, and feel that Naatiya has become part of their community.”
At the heart of the restaurant's identity is South Indian cuisine, a regional style known for its extraordinary variety of flavors, aromas and textures. Rice, lentils, coconut, curry leaves, mustard seeds and an array of spices are all important ingredients, but Kannan says the cuisine is about much more than heat.
“South Indian food is much more than just ‘spicy food,’” he says. “It is about balance, freshness, tradition, and layers of flavor.”
Naatiya's menu offers the opportunity to discover dishes beyond the familiar than some Indian restaurant standards. Among them are dosa, the crisp, savory crepe that can be served with a variety of fillings and accompanied by chutneys; idli, steamed rice cakes; vada, savory fried snacks; sambar; biryani; and a variety of traditional South Indian curries.
Kannan particularly encourages newcomers to try dosa.
“It is crispy, flavorful, and can be enjoyed with different fillings and chutneys,” he says.
The restaurant also offers varied accompaniments and spice combinations that help define South Indian cooking. Chutneys, sambar and carefully balanced seasonings add layers of flavor and texture to a meal, creating an experience that can be both comforting and vibrant.
Naatiya recognizes that Indian cuisine is remarkably diverse. While South Indian specialties remain a defining part of the restaurant's identity, the menu also includes popular North Indian dishes such as butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, paneer dishes and vegetarian curries, along with naan and other traditional breads.
“We hope guests will come in for a familiar North Indian favorite and leave having discovered something new from the South,” Kannan says.
That balance also guides the restaurant's approach to first-time guests. Naatiya strives to remain authentic without making the experience intimidating. Staff members can explain dishes and ingredients, recommend menu items and help guests navigate different spice levels while preserving the traditional character of the food.
“Ultimately, our goal is authenticity without intimidation.”
Many of the restaurant's dishes also carry personal meaning. The ingredients and techniques reflect memories of family meals and traditions passed down through generations. Fresh curry leaves, coconut, lentils, rice, mustard seeds and traditional spices all play a role in creating flavors Kannan associates with home.
“When a customer tells us that a dish reminds them of something they ate growing up, or that it tastes like food from their own family, that is one of the greatest compliments we can receive.”
Since opening, Naatiya has built a loyal following throughout the Greater Hartford area. Kannan credits that longevity to consistency, freshness, authentic flavors and genuine hospitality—but especially to the relationships developed over the years.
“We’ve had customers who first came to us years ago and now bring their children and grandchildren. For us, Naatiya is not simply a place to eat—it’s become part of the local community, and we’re grateful for that.”
