Nana’s Favorite Funnel Cakes

Enjoy Funnel Cakes at home courtesy of Nana’s Famous BBQ & Grill, 20 year member of the Greeley Stampede

Strolling through the grounds of the Greeley Stampede, you’re bound to come across the sweet smell of cinnamon, sugar, and fried dough that takes you back to your childhood days at the Greeley Stampede. Every year, Stampede go-ers look forward to the mouth-watering, irresistible funnel cakes on the fairgrounds, and of the numerous food vendors that attend the Stampede annually, Nana’s Famous BBQ & Grill is a steadfast favorite. Sandra Baker started Nana’s Famous BBQ & Grill while attending college in 1997 and for over twenty years has been a proud member of the Greeley Stampede’s vendor line-up. Baker says, “I love the Greeley Stampede! There is always a great energy between the volunteers and guests that is upbeat, kind, and a whole lot of fun!” Baker strives to give her customers new and creative hand crafted items alongside old traditional smash hits - like the funnel cake. So as you stroll through the Greeley Stampede this summer and smell the sweet aromas of funnel cakes, stop by Nana’s Famous BBQ & Grill for her unique and savory items that help delight your taste buds this Stampede season. 

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups flour

  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar 

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Vegetable oil

  • Powdered sugar

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat oil in frying pan on high for about 4 minutes, then reduce to medium

  2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt 

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until well blended. Add in flour mixture

  4. Pour batter into a gallon Ziploc bag, cut the corner of the bag slightly making it into a piping bag

  5. Test the oil by dropping in a small amount of batter, it should cook on contact

  6. Start pouring the batter in by making a complete circle, then an X, then small swirls

  7. Once the funnel cake is golden brown, flip it until golden brown on the other side

  8. Using metal tongs, pull the cake from the oil.  Let the oil drip, then place it on a plate and sprinkle with powdered sugar and toppings of choice
