When you think of exploring new places, your mind might go to young adventurers backpacking across Europe or families road-tripping to national parks. But for Johnathan Newman, co-founder of Right Choice Home Care, travel is just as vital for seniors—especially those who thought their traveling days were behind them. This summer, Right Choice is launching a group trip to California’s wine country designed specifically for seniors, complete with caregivers on hand. It’s more than a vacation; it’s part of a mission to help older adults stay curious, independent, and connected.
The idea began with a simple conversation. “We had a client who was wheelchair-bound, and her daughter traveled around the country giving lectures,” Johnathan explains. “I said, ‘If you ever wanted to take your mom with you, we can provide a caregiver.’ That trip worked out beautifully and showed us what was possible.” Years later, Right Choice decided to expand this concept into offering full travel experiences for seniors as part of their care.
Travel can feel daunting for older adults, especially those with mobility challenges. Often, they hesitate because they don’t want to be a burden on family. “People forget that before needing care, our clients lived vibrant, exciting lives,” Johnathan says. “Travel gives them a chance to reconnect with that spirit—and do it without feeling like they’re inconveniencing loved ones.” The upcoming California trip offers a perfect balance of accessibility, beautiful scenery, and engaging activities, such as learning about winemaking and exploring local culture, designed to suit different ability levels and interests.
Travel offers more than sightseeing—it can renew a senior’s sense of purpose. “It’s not just about going somewhere,” Johnathan says. “It’s about being able to say, ‘I’m going on a trip. I’ll be gone for a week.’ That simple statement is so powerful. It reminds our clients and their families that life is still full of possibilities.” Each trip includes cultural and educational elements, from history talks to community interactions, encouraging seniors to stay mentally engaged and connected.
Right Choice carefully plans trips to accommodate different comfort levels. “Not everyone wants to squish grapes or hike through vineyards,” Johnathan admits. “But simply experiencing new places, sharing meals, and seeing beautiful landscapes creates lasting memories.” Looking ahead, Johnathan envisions travel becoming a core part of Right Choice’s mission to support senior well-being and independence. “Many seniors traveled extensively when they were younger,” he says. “We’re giving them the chance to do that again with the support they need.”
This isn’t about bringing back souvenirs but about creating meaningful experiences and stories that seniors can share with family for years to come. “We want them to come back full of laughter and memories, not just keychains,” Johnathan says. Right Choice’s inaugural California trip is just the beginning of a new way to explore the world—making travel accessible and joyful for seniors who deserve it most.
We want seniors to create meaningful memories, not just bring back souvenirs—travel that truly enriches their lives.
