Purgatory Resort perfectly blends classic Colorado ski resort and local mountain-town culture. It is also home to a branch of the world's most extensive grassroots ski racing program.
The National Standard Race (NASTAR) allows recreational skiers and snowboarders to run a downhill race course and compare their scores with family and friends from any of the more than 100 participating resorts nationwide. The NASTAR handicap system allows participants to track their score or handicap based on the time set by the National Pacesetter.
NASTAR was established in 1968 by SKI Magazine, and it has grown to include more than 100,000 races throughout the country’s participating ski resorts. Currently operated by Outside Inc., NASTAR continues to encourage ski enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to experience alpine racing firsthand while raising awareness about the sport and inspiring a new generation of downhill racers.
“Our mission is simple - to provide a fun, competitive, and easily accessible racing program that, through the development of a handicap system, allows racers of all ages and abilities a means to compare their race results to other competitors across the country regardless of when and where they race.”
If you are not a registered NASTAR member, you will be asked to complete a NASTAR Registration Form to capture the information necessary to create your Race Record at nastar.com. The process is quick and efficient.
You don't have to be a pro to participate in downhill racing. With millions of racers spanning from young to old, expert to beginner, NASTAR is an inclusive way for anyone to experience the exhilaration of racing gates with family and friends, whether they are near or far.
To register, go to nastar.com and receive a number that lets you race at any participating resort. And be sure to glide over to the race shack at the top of Lift 1!
