One-of-a-Kind Decor

Dee Sloan, owner of Sylvan Lake’s Board & Brush, shares how to create a unique wall hanging for your space.

  1. Find where you want to hang the item, and go for a hike to locate that perfect tree branch for your space.

  2. Paint old paint brushes! Don’t have any brushes? Ask your neighbors, family or friends as people tend to hold onto old paint brushes and would be happy to find a home for them! Sloan painted her brushes multi-colored, solid colors and rainbow colors, and she said you can even paint the handles different colors. Make sure you let them dry before moving on to the next step.

  3. Use a fishing line to hang the paintbrushes at various heights along your branch.

  4. Hang your finished piece! Sloan said she’d use some sort of hanging wire wrapped around your branch before hanging your project.

Not only is this project easy to make, but Sloan said it can be a wonderful conversation piece and focal point in any room. “One quote that has always stuck with me is by Brene Brown: ‘Unused creativity is not benign. It metastasizes. It turns into grief, rage, judgement, sorrow, shame.’ I believe it’s important to find a creative outlet no matter your age, and I think this fun project can appeal to any age.”
