Sure, Frederick has it all—but even the most devoted locals need a change of scenery now and then. Sometimes, the best way to appreciate home is to leave it for the day. Whether you're chasing mountaintop views, strolling historic main streets or breathing in the salt air, these nearby escapes offer a fresh perspective and a welcoming pause. Each destination is just a short drive away and packed with its own charm, flavors and adventures—perfect for a one-day reset.

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

First, head to Maryland Heights Trail (Sunrise Hike) and kick off your day early with this iconic 4.5-mile out-and-back trail that rewards you with sweeping views of the Harpers Ferry townscape and the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Locals love it best at sunrise. Visit Jefferson Rock, a short walk from the lower town historic district, for a slice of history. Thomas Jefferson once stood here and described the scene as “worth a voyage across the Atlantic.” Then head to Harpers Ferry Adventure Center to cool off with a whitewater rafting trip or zipline canopy tour. This locally loved outfitter offers everything from tubing to aerial obstacle courses—perfect for thrill-seekers or families looking to mix it up. End your day at Harpers Ferry Brewing with a cold pint and jaw-dropping views of the river valley. With a large outdoor space, live music and a laid-back crowd, this brewery is where locals go to relax after a day on the water or trail.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Kick off your trip at Rehoboth Beach & Boardwalk with a mile-long walk lined with quirky shops, snacks and ocean views. Dip your toes in the Atlantic and don’t leave without a bucket of Thrasher’s French Fries, best enjoyed with a splash of vinegar and ocean breeze. It’s a scene straight out of a vintage postcard. Just north of town, Cape Henlopen State Park offers a peaceful beach experience with scenic trails, historic sites and dolphin-spotting opportunities. If you prefer to pedal, the Junction & Breakwater Trail is a laid-back 6-mile bike ride through coastal forests and wetlands between Rehoboth and Lewes.

Leesburg, Virginia

Start your day at Lucketts Store exploring a part antique store, part design destination. This place is always full of surprises. Spend an hour or an afternoon browsing funky furniture, vintage décor and carefully curated treasures. Stop by Morven Park or Oatlands Historic House & Gardens, just minutes from the heart of Leesburg. These two historic estates offer a serene escape into Virginia’s rich past. Morven Park, once home to a Virginia governor, features grand architecture, scenic walking trails and equestrian roots. Just south, Oatlands enchants visitors with its impeccably preserved Greek Revival mansion, formal terraced gardens and quiet beauty—perfect for a thoughtful afternoon stroll. After, head to Vanish Brewery. Set on a scenic 62-acre farm, the laid-back atmosphere is perfect for sipping craft beer and indulging in amazing food. With over 20 rotating taps and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, it's a go-to spot for live music, food trucks and unforgettable sunsets.

Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

Start your day with a hike through towering hemlocks along the Youghiogheny River at Swallow Falls State Park. Muddy Creek Falls, a stunning 53-foot waterfall, is one of Maryland’s most photogenic natural wonders. Then head to Deep Creek Lake State Park. Whether you're kayaking, paddleboarding or lounging lakeside, this is the heart of the Deep Creek experience. In summer, swim at the sandy beach. In fall, soak in vibrant foliage. Year-round, the views never disappoint. Grab lunch at Firewater Kitchen & Bar or MoonShadow and fuel up at one of the area's local favorites. Firewater offers lakeside views while MoonShadow is known for creative eats and live music. Finish your day with a thrill at Wisp Resort. In winter, hit the slopes. In warmer months, try the mountain coaster, golf, scenic chairlift rides or ziplining. It's a four-season playground packed with adventure.

Annapolis, Maryland

Start your day in the heart of downtown Annapolis, where brick-lined streets and colonial architecture set the scene. Pop into local shops along Main Street, then head to the Maryland State House—the oldest in continuous legislative use in the country. Walk the waterfront and watch sailboats glide through Spa Creek or book a short cruise for panoramic views of the Naval Academy and Chesapeake Bay. Stroll through the U.S. Naval Academy grounds (bring a photo ID for entry) or relax at Quiet Waters Park, a local gem offering trails, gardens and scenic overlooks. When you get hungry, try oysters and cocktails at Sailor Oyster Bar or for something more upscale, try Chart House Prime

Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Pop into Lancaster Central Market, the oldest continuously operating public market in the U.S., packed with local produce, baked goods and globally inspired eats. Don’t leave without trying a whoopie pie or homemade soft pretzel. Gallery Row is just a few blocks of walkable downtown, bursting with local art, handmade goods and quirky boutiques. First Fridays are especially lively with open galleries and live music. The Demuth Museum & Lancaster Museum of Art offers a quiet but inspiring stop for those who appreciate fine art and the legacy of American modernist Charles Demuth. Stop in for Amish eats at Katie’s Kitchen, Amish-owned and operated, serving up cozy homestyle meals, sandwiches and baked goods made from traditional recipes. Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord is a beloved buffet featuring scratch-made Pennsylvania Dutch classics using farm-fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
