One World Surgery Gala

Breaking Barriers Building Hope

On Saturday, October 5th, Summit Orthopedics hosted their annual One World Surgery Gala at
the InterContinental Minneapolis. More than 550 guests attended to celebrate and raise funds
for the orthopedic care provider’s philanthropic mission, which is presently active in Honduras
and the Dominican Republic.

“Dr. Peter Daly, who is one of Summit Orthopedics’ surgeons, saw a pressing need for
orthopedic care in Honduras while volunteering at a children’s home there in 2003,” said
Shannon Sotomayor, communications manager for One World Surgery. “We opened a surgery center there after some years of planning. Our doctors have consulted over 118,000 patients and performed more than 12,500 life-changing surgeries since 2009. And with the
grand opening of our second clinic last September – the Dominican Republic’s first-ever ambulatory surgery center – we are now looking forward to making an even greater impact.”

The One World Surgery Gala featured guest speaker Miriam Garcia, quality and education
manager for the Honduras clinic, who shared her touching account of breaking barriers as a
wife, mother, and professional in her home country. Several other speakers shared their
experiences serving residents of developing nations – many of whom would have died or
remained permanently disabled were it not for One World Surgery’s timely intervention.

This year’s gala raised just over $750,000 through ticket sales, live and silent auctions, and the
ever popular coffee-and-wine wheel. Summit Orthopedics offers their profuse thanks to
everyone who attended, and welcomes all to next year’s gala!
