Over nearly seven decades, the company has built a reputation as a cornerstone of the city's artistic identity, engaging audiences through captivating performances, educational outreach and innovative programs.

Founded by civic leaders and members of the Beethoven Club, Opera Memphis's origins are deeply rooted in a passion for musical artistry. Its inaugural event, "An Introduction to Opera," set the tone for decades of artistic achievement in October 1956. Thereafter, its first production solidified the company’s direction with "La Traviata" in March 1957. Throughout its history, the organization has welcomed to its stage some of the most celebrated artists in the world of opera. Performers like Leontyne Price, Beverly Sills and Joan Sutherland have graced Memphis audiences, leaving a lasting legacy that has solidified the company’s role as a cultural leader.

Always striving to evolve with the changing times, Opera Memphis embarked on a transformative journey in January 2023 by relocating its headquarters to Midtown Memphis. This strategic move reflects the company’s commitment to accessibility, ensuring that its performances are within reach of a broader and more diverse audience. By positioning itself in the city's heart, Opera Memphis also reinforced its dedication to inclusivity and community engagement.

The company's commitment to innovation has been evident throughout its most recent seasons, which showcased a rich array of performances designed to engage a broad audience. One of the season’s highlights was "30 Days of Opera," an initiative held in September 2023 that brought opera to unconventional spaces across Memphis. From parks to plazas, the program aimed to demystify the art form and invite new audiences to experience the magic of opera. The season also included the a concert series which featured beloved works by Gershwin, Schubert and Britten. Sponsored by Duncan Williams Asset Management, these performances exemplified Opera Memphis’s ability to bridge the classic and the contemporary, captivating audiences with timeless music while embracing modern storytelling.

For its 2024-25 season, Opera Memphis offered a lineup designed to thrill traditional opera lovers while captivating new fans. The season included a production of the timeless masterpiece Carmen, a work celebrated for its dramatic narrative and unforgettable music. An especially momentous occasion in 2025 was when Memphis hosted the Memphis Opera Conference. This international event connected leading figures in the operatic world, from artists and scholars to enthusiasts, positioning Memphis as a vital hub for operatic discourse and creativity.

Looking forward, anticipation builds for the 25-26 season, as the official schedule remains under wraps. However, it's confirmed that September will mark the return of “30 Days of Opera.” Shelbi Sellers, Director of Partnerships at Memphis Opera, shares that audiences can look forward to a diverse range of performances featuring varying scales and styles, with the season culminating in a production of Sweeney Todd in collaboration with Playhouse on the Square.

As it approaches its seventh decade, Opera Memphis continues to honor its storied past while embracing the future with enthusiasm and creativity.
