Osprey Lane

A Story of Community, Resilience, and Style

On West Main Street in Somerville, Osprey Lane Boutique symbolizes the resilience, passion, and community spirit of its owner, Maria Vraniak. From overcoming personal battles to weathering the challenges of a pandemic, Vraniak's journey from a corporate career to the world of fashion has been anything but predictable.

The Beginnings

Vraniak's journey into the fashion world began in an unconventional way. "I started in a pop-up trailer at the end of December 2021," she recalls. Osprey Lane, initially formed as an LLC, transitioned to a mobile trailer in July 2022, which they lovingly called "The Mobile Osprey." This unique concept transformed a trailer into a mobile boutique complete with a fitting room and lights, offering a personalized shopping experience at local markets, private parties, and events. She operated "The Mobile Osprey" for a year until opening her storefront in May 2023.

Before diving into the boutique business, Vraniak had an extensive career in the pharmaceutical industry. She served as the national account director for a generic pharmaceutical company for nearly a decade. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought a shift in her perspective. "I was bored. And I thought we would never be able to travel again," she reflects. Encouraged by her husband to pursue her passion for fashion, Vraniak enrolled in online courses for fashion merchandising at Cornell University, earning her degree and laying the foundation for Osprey Lane Boutique.

Opening the Storefront

Expanding from a mobile trailer to a brick-and-mortar store was a significant step for Vraniak. "We have a five-year lease, so I have no choice but to make it work," she says with determination. The store's opening in May 2023 marked a new chapter for Osprey Lane Boutique. Despite the challenges, Vraniak is thrilled with the progress. "Time certainly has flown. And I cannot believe all we have done to get here."

The decision to establish the boutique in Somerville was driven by the community's needs. "A lot of the customers at various in-town pop-ups said, 'We need you here, in town. We do not have anything here for women," Vraniak notes. After considering various locations, the sense of community in Somerville won her over. "I'm from Bridgewater and Somerville is like our downtown. There are no clothing stores here for women except for Revive Consignment," she says.

The Power of Community

The Somerville community has played a crucial role in the success of Osprey Lane Boutique. This sense of belonging was particularly evident during a local fire that affected several Somerville businesses this past June. "We were a hub for donations. I walked into my store and was overwhelmed by the amount of donations within a very short period of time," Vraniak recalls. The community’s swift response brought her to tears, underscoring the support and unity that defines Somerville.

Vraniak reflects on first opening her store, "Not for one minute did I ever feel like the new kid on the block." The local businesses welcomed her with open arms.

Overcoming Personal Challenges

Vraniak's journey has not been without personal struggles. Leaving her corporate job was challenging, especially given her close ties to her former colleagues. "I had a brain tumor and went through all of that while I was working in my corporate role. They were like my extended family," she shares. Despite this, her former employer's support remained unwavering, even keeping her job open as a safety net. "They kept my job open until January of the following year," Vraniak says.

Her husband’s unwavering support was also instrumental in her transition. "He's a go-getter. He told me, 'You will never fail; you are going to launch, you are going to make mistakes, you are going to learn from those mistakes, and you are going to adjust and move forward,'" Vraniak says. This support, combined with her resilience, helped her navigate the uncertainties of starting a new business.

Curating Fall Styles

As the seasons change, Osprey Lane Boutique prepares to highlight the latest fall styles. Vraniak's approach to curating her collection is thoughtful and inclusive. "We are size inclusive. We carry XS to 3X as well as some petite denim," she explains. Her commitment to inclusivity extends beyond sizes to the styles she offers. "I want people to feel confident and powerful when they leave the store."

Shopping for a diverse range of customers presents its challenges. "It's very difficult to shop for the petite or curvy community. The brands often put bright colors and big patterns that are not appealing. I will not just buy an item just to say I carry all sizes. It has to be in line with what our brand is all about," Vraniak notes.

Looking ahead to fall, Osprey Lane Boutique is ready to embrace this season's trends. "The trends that are coming to market are kind of crazy, but we'll see how we can make them work," Vraniak says with a smile. From cozy sweaters to stylish denim, her goal is to provide options that cater to all body types and preferences.

A Vision for the Future

Vraniak's vision for Osprey Lane Boutique is clear. She wants it to be more than just a place to shop—she wants it to be a community hub where everyone feels welcome. "I want our clients to feel confident, powerful, safe, and welcomed," she says. Her commitment to personalized service and quality products sets Osprey Lane apart from larger retailers.

"Not everybody is small; not everybody has this Barbie figure; and not everyone's the same," Vraniak notes. Her dedication to offering inclusive fashion is a cornerstone of her boutique's philosophy. She continuously seeks feedback from her customers to ensure that her store meets their needs.

In Somerville, Osprey Lane Boutique is not just a store; it is a symbol of strength, resilience, community, and style. With the support of her community and family, Vraniak has created a space where everyone can find something that makes them feel beautiful and confident. As the leaves change and the air becomes crisp, Osprey Lane Boutique stands ready to welcome fall with open arms and a collection of the season's best styles.
