Thomas “Tommy” Aceto is a champion for mental health and wellness—and it all began with his healing journey. After 16 years serving as a Navy SEAL Trauma Medic, Tommy battled post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety, and addiction. He thought he was broken.
Then he began to learn about the world of mental wellness and the science behind it. That’s when everything changed. He wasn’t broken—his nervous system was responding to trauma. “…everything I was experiencing had a biological component. That shifted my perspective from shame to curiosity.”
As he experienced breakthroughs in his life, he knew he needed to offer that same hope and healing to others. Tommy founded the Neuroscience and Wellness Initiative in 2024 to educate people about mental health and intends to create a network of wellness farms across Tennessee. He aims to offer healing by “combining neuroscience, nutrition, fitness, community, music, storytelling, and practical life skills.”
He’s also a powerful advocate in the local community. He’s spoken at Drake White’s Benefit for the Brain at the Ryman and partners with TN Voices to bring needed resources and education to Tennessee residents. His vision is for the state to become a leading voice in mental wellness solutions.
Mental health conversations have come a long way, but Tommy still sees barriers that prevent men from seeking help, like pride, isolation, and lack of education. “A lot of men were never taught how to process emotions or ask for help. Instead, they suppress it until it shows up as anger, addiction, or depression.” Through his organization, he seeks to create spaces where men can show up honestly, find community, and experience healing.
For anyone who isn’t sure how to take the first step, he says: “Start simple. Learn how to slow your breathing, get outside in nature, move your body, reduce isolation and create, create, create! You don’t need to solve everything at once—you just need to start regulating your system. From there, everything flows. Find the three Gs: Gratitude, Grace, and Grit.”
To him, “Mental wellness isn’t just about avoiding illness—it’s about unlocking potential. It’s about turning ‘Pain into Passion’…My life’s mission is to help people move from surviving to a state of thriving. From fear and shame to a place of creation. Life is too precious to waste…life is a gift. It’s what you do with it.”
