Ready for a workout that helps you meet new friends? Try pickleball, the social sport that’s taking the City of Troy like a, well, like an overhead smash shot.

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America, described as a combination of ping-pong, tennis and badminton. It’s fun, social and friendly. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but it can develop into a fast-paced competitive game.

Best of all, pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors, so you can play year-round.

“I like it because it was easy to learn and it’s a good workout,” says Gert Paraskevin, a City of Troy retiree. “It’s not overly strenuous and a lot of fun. It’s a social event that gets me out of the house and meeting a lot of different people from all walks of life.”

Nancy Morrison, Executive Director of the Troy Community Coalition, agrees. “I usually play for two hours at a time and the time goes by so fast. I feel a sense of community when I play, meeting so many nice people who are now my friends. I’m competitive and we challenge each other to continue to improve our game. As a group, we go to dinner or the show, so we’re now friends on and off the court. It’s been a very positive life-changing experience.”Ready to play?
