A gallery or collage wall is simply a collection -- a wonderful way to add personality to any room. Follow these tips for creating your best-styled gallery wall.
1. Gather Your Collection
Take time to gather the pieces. A collage wall is the perfect place to show off items you’ve collected on trips, vintage items or family pieces. Mix different styles. Gallery walls feel more interesting if some of the pieces are personal, so include a favorite family portrait or children’s artwork. Keep the color palette simple. Create a cohesive look by using one or two similar frame colors. If you like a more eclectic look, mix and match the frames. You can always use different style frames but paint them the same color.
2. Plan It
Start in the center of the wall for balance. Anchor a favorite piece or a couple of larger pieces in the center. Then start working additional pieces around them. Plan out your collage on the floor. You can create a template of the different pieces using butcher's block paper, then easily move them around to create the collage. Keep about 2 inches between the framed artwork.
3. Hang It
Hanging the first few pieces at eye level or around 5 feet. If you have high ceilings, you can hang them a bit higher. Then you can hang pieces below or above the center pieces. Your collage will look completely different on the wall, so step back every now and then to view the pieces as you hang them. Notice how the pieces balance each other in size and color. Add smaller pieces to fill in any gaps in the gallery.
Gallery walls are all about your collections. It’s up to you. Have fun adding or changing pieces!
