Mind-ful Therapy

Device Offers Relief From Depression, Anxiety and Even Compulsive Behaviors

What if you could find relief from depression, anxiety and even compulsive behaviors – and it could all be done painlessly and virtually effortlessly in a few weeks’ time?

In addition to its wide array of health care treatments and products for men and women, Premier Healthcare (PremierHealthcareok.com) is now offering a new treatment called Exomind, which is based on a long-established technology called “TMS” or transcranial magnetic stimulation, first developed in 1985.

Dr. Amber N. Redding-Slootheer, DNP, APRN-CNP, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and co-owner of Premier Healthcare (with husband Roy M. Slootheer, APRN-CNP), explains that, with this technology, “a coil creates a magnetic field that uses gentle electric currents on the brain – a process called “long-term potentiation.”

This process, Redding-Slootheer said, boosts neuron activity and improves communication between the neurons in the DLPFC (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), the area of the brain that regulates mood and other emotional processes, which can improve emotional well-being. Exomind is FDA approved for the treatment of depression and can also improve anxiety, OCD and compulsive eating, she added.

A Short History

Exomind was created by scientists at BTL, a Prague-based company that is a world-leader in aesthetics. The company has over 200 patents and 500 in-house engineers who use medical technology and science to create advanced medical treatments.

“Older versions of TMS required the patient to wear a large, heavy magnetic helmet for multiple hours-long sessions for about 30 days in a row, which was not convenient (or enjoyable) for patients,” she noted.

Extensive studies of the technology were conducted in the U.S. and Canada to prompt FDA approval for treatment of depression. It was also approved by Health Canada for treating anxiety, OCD and excessive eating disorders. Some Premier Healthcare patients may be eligible for insurance coverage of the treatments (depending on their insurance plan).

What It Does, How It Works

Exomind is designed to enhance neuroplasticity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The technique enhances the brain’s ability to form new connections and enhances communication between neurons.

“In other words,” Redding-Slootheer said, “it helps your brain form new, healthy connections in order to function better. Patients can expect to see improvements in depression symptoms, clearer thinking, enhanced feelings of calm/less anxiety, and decrease in compulsive behaviors—even those centered around over-eating.

“Patients have also reported an 85% satisfaction in greater willpower, emotional control and cognitive function in studies done by BTL after treatments with Exomind.”

Who Can Benefit?

Most people can benefit from the treatments, which are FDA approved for those age 21 and above, Redding-Slootheer said. However, with a few exceptions.

“Exomind can benefit a wide range of patients—from those seeking just general mental health and emotional support, to those specifically seeking help with depression and anxiety symptoms,” she said.

“It has been shown to help even those patients that have experienced medication-resistance to depression. It is a great treatment to even help with burnout, focus issues, or stress in general.”

Exomind is not approved for treatment of severe depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, and cannot be used by anyone with metal implants near the DLPFC or a seizure disorder.

Treatment Details

“Treatments are 30 minutes long and recommended once weekly for six total sessions,” Redding-Slootheer said. “Exomind is completely painless, and patients will only feel a gentle vibration on the scalp during the treatments. There is no sedation or downtime, so patients can return to normal activities immediately after treatments.”

Redding-Slootheer calls Exomind “an amazing drug-free alternative for improvement of mental issues, since it actually targets the area in the brain that controls these functions.”

A device that reduces anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive behaviors, not to mention gaining clearer thinking? Sounds like a no-brainer (pun intended!). Visit with a Premier Healthcare professional to learn more.
