What Every Parent Should Know

As a Family Nurse Practitioner, owner of NoBe Wellness Medspa, and mother of a 10-year-old girl, I understand the concerns parents have when it comes to their children’s skin health. The skincare industry is flooded with products targeting young consumers, often with little regard for safety and efficacy. It’s crucial to approach preteen and teen skincare with an evidence-based mindset to protect their delicate skin while fostering healthy habits for life.

Understanding Young Skin

Preteen and teen skin is different from adult skin. It is more resilient in some ways but also more prone to acne due to hormonal changes. Overuse of harsh products or treatments not suited for young skin can lead to irritation, disruption of the skin barrier, and long-term damage.

Evidence-Based Skincare Practices for Preteens and Teens

  1. Gentle Cleansing:

    • Studies suggest that over-washing or using harsh cleansers can strip the skin of natural oils, leading to increased oil production and irritation. A mild, fragrance-free cleanser twice daily is sufficient.

  2. Moisturization:

    • Even acne-prone skin needs hydration. Non-comedogenic, lightweight moisturizers with ceramides and hyaluronic acid support the skin barrier without clogging pores.

  3. Sun Protection:

    • The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) stresses that daily SPF use is the best way to prevent early signs of aging and skin cancer. Broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) should be part of every teen’s routine, even on cloudy days.

  4. Acne Management:

    • Evidence supports benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid as effective treatments for mild acne, but they should be introduced gradually. For persistent cases, consulting a healthcare professional is best.

  5. Avoiding Harsh or Trendy Treatments:

    • TikTok trends often promote DIY skincare hacks that lack scientific backing and can be harmful. Lemon juice, toothpaste, and aggressive exfoliation can lead to irritation and long-term damage.

Setting a Healthy Example

As parents, our approach to skincare sets the tone for our children’s habits. Encouraging a simple, evidence-based routine, avoiding unrealistic beauty standards, and prioritizing skin health over cosmetic trends will help our kids develop confidence in their natural beauty.

At NoBe Wellness Medspa, we emphasize safe, effective skincare tailored to each individual’s needs. While some medspa treatments can be beneficial for teens with specific concerns, professional guidance is key to ensuring their safety.
