I spoke with two of Greenwich's fashion experts for our style issue.

ASHLEY: Tell us how Katie Fong Collection got started.

KATIE: Katie Fong Collection started in her parent’s house in 2012 when I decided to turn an unused library space into my workroom. I was working full time in the city and then coming home to pattern and sew made-to-measure garments for my own clients. In January 2013, I left my job and officially launched my company.

ASHLEY: What (or who) inspires your designs?

KATIE: Growing up in Greenwich, I was surrounded by classic and timeless fashion with a modern and feminine twist. Greenwich women have always had an effortless, elegant way of dressing, which I still think is true to this day. I’ve come to discover over the years of having my boutique in town that this style is appreciated by women all over the country.

ASHLEY:  What should people expect when coming into your boutique?

KATIE: The boutique carries my Seasonless Collection which is entirely made-to-order and available in over 300 colors. While our typical turnaround time is 5-8 weeks, we have been extremely busy with the surge in weddings, so I always recommend more lead time! I have also collaborated with several small jewelry and accessories designers (many of them local) to offer our customers a selection of high-quality fashion jewelry and fine accessories.

Wardrobe stylist Maria Turkel has been boosting people’s confidence since 2007, whether they’re running errands or board meetings.

ASHLEY: Tell us how you got started as a personal stylist.

MARIA: I was one of the original wardrobe supervisors on the TV show, Friends, dressing all six main cast members each week, as well as all guest stars and background artists. Additionally, I’m trained in fashion design and can sketch, drape and sew. After moving back East and starting a family, I decided to use my training and experience to start a business that fed my creativity, uplifted others (women, mainly), and fit into my life as a wife and mom of three children.

ASHLEY: What should people expect when working with you?

MARIA: A fun, judgment-free, authentic collaboration. My goal is to help each person feel confident and authentic in their everyday lives through their wardrobe choices. No closet or price point is too big or too small. Location doesn’t matter—we can meet virtually and achieve equally great results as when I meet people in their homes.

ASHLEY: What do you love most about the style scene in Greenwich?

MARIA: The variety of shops on Greenwich Avenue, in Cos Cob and Old Greenwich is just wonderful. I appreciate that people in Greenwich like to get dressed for all types of events in their lives whether they’re running errands, going to lunch/dinner or attending a special event.

ASHLEY: Finally, are there any style tips or words of fashion wisdom you'd like to share?

MARIA: Always, always wear what feels good on YOU. The best way to find your personal style is to focus on your favorites regardless of what others are wearing or what others say is stylish or fashionable. Learn what works on you and build an amazing wardrobe from there. When you look good, you feel good and when you feel good, you do good.
