Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Diana Nordeen, founder of Glo Skin Studio in West St. Paul. Within just a few moments, it was obvious to me the passion that she has for her business, and for the clients that she gets to work with every day. Glo Skin Studio isn’t just a boutique medi spa, it’s her calling.
Meet Diana Nordeen, Owner of Glo Skin Studio
Diana is an experienced esthetician with 15 years in the field. And, she’s been changing lives through skincare since she opened her studio in November 2021. But how she got into the skincare business didn’t take a linear path.
It started in her mid-twenties when she suddenly faced severe acne. Her experience wasn’t unique; an estimated 50% of women will experience some degree of acne during that time in their lives. Yet, despite trying various treatments, nothing was working. And she wanted to avoid harsh solutions like Accutane. So, she turned to natural remedies and started exploring how personalized skin care could help with acne and rejuvenate the skin.
With a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Diana was uncertain about her next steps after college. It was during her first facial that she had an epiphany. “When I got my first facial and laid on the table, I knew this could be a fulfilling career for me,” she recalls. Growing up without spa visits, this experience opened her eyes to a world where she could help others take care of their skin.
Diana attended the Aveda Institute and then worked for Lifetime Fitness for 12 years, learning more and more about skincare, including medical esthetics and laser treatments. Her goal has always been to help others correct their skin issues and feel better about themselves.
Fast Forward to Today
At Glo Skin Studio, Diana has carefully chosen services and products that are accessible to most people. “Not everyone can afford high-cost treatments,” she shared with me during our conversation. “And not everyone needs high-cost treatments, either.”
Diana focuses on educating and teaching her clients about the origins and causes of skin issues. She believes that what clients do at home is where it all starts. “Home care regimens evolve based on the skin's condition, the season we are in, etc.,” she explains. Diana customizes these regimens, improving her clients' skin by determining the best approach for their needs.
Working progressively with her patients, Diana starts with basic treatments and gradually moves to more advanced ones based on long-term goals. She believes in combo therapy, combining multiple treatments to achieve the best results. Her focus is always on what the patients want. She doesn’t believe in just offering the latest trends.
Diana is a double-certified acne specialist with a pro-acne program that works like a boot camp. She helps clients establish the right home care, reviews lifestyle factors contributing to acne, and determines routine treatments. If clients follow her guidance, she says there is a 90% success rate in as little as 90 days. However, realistic expectations are a must, as results can take longer when you don’t make the right changes to your lifestyle.
Top Tips to Take Care of Your Skin
Living a lifestyle that reduces toxins herself, Diana approaches skincare naturally and holistically. While she admits there aren't entirely organic lines that deliver amazing results, she has carefully selected pharmaceutical-grade products that are mostly non-toxic. Her whole-body approach considers all aspects of a client’s lifestyle and skin condition.
Though not a medical provider, Diana speaks from personal experience and extensive collaboration with other professionals. And she has these practical tips to offer our readers:
-
Wear sunscreen every day, year-round. If outside for prolonged periods, reapply every 90 minutes to two hours (or sooner if in water or heavily sweating).
-
Drink a minimum of 80 ounces of water per day.
-
Try to minimize inflammatory foods in your diet, specifically processed sugar, excess dairy, and wheat.
-
Don’t sleep in your make-up. Be sure to remove it completely before you go to bed.
-
Make sure your skin cleanser is pH-balanced.
Men also benefit from Diana’s expertise. “I wish more men were speaking out and asking for assistance with their skin,” she says, noting that interest among men is growing.
Acne remains Diana's clients' top concern, followed by the desire for an even skin tone. Glo Skin Studio offers all the services you can hope for in a boutique medi spa near you, from acne programs and chemical peels to microneedling and more. While some procedures yield instant results, others take time, as true skin transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Once goals are achieved, Diana emphasizes that maintenance is a must to protect the health and appearance of the skin.
A Passion that Runs Skin-Deep
Diana’s passion for skincare and her dedication to helping others was evident throughout our conversation. Her own experience battling acne to becoming a leading esthetician is so inspiring. And it shows that with the right guidance and care, radiant skin is achievable for everyone.
